Hi everybody.

I have a quick question for you all, and that is...

What are some things you wish you were taught about your T1D which would have made treating it much easier?

I'll be sticking around for a little to enjoy your responses.

3....2....1....GO.

Great question!

Low carbing, how to basal test and adjustment of basal and bolus for exercise.

I wish that once I was flagged for retinopathy someone had said hi G forces can burst the blood vessels in your eye. So be warned Bungee jumps, extreme ringo rides behind speed boats (in my case) can be a bad idea!

So true, I'm currently running on the ketogenic diet (sub 50g of carbs/day) and my bloods are great.

That's really unfortunate, sorry to hear about your eye trouble.
Guess I better cut back on the jet-skiing!

I wish I was told when I became a tennager the dangers of not thinking your a Type1, I was a very bad Type1 for many years and now reaping the not so good benefits of a life lived like a muppet :(

Saying that though, you live a learn ;)

LCHF from the start - I know people want to feel 'normal' but dealing with highs followed by crashing lows and having to set the alarm through the night to check sugars were safe. Thought this was a normal life with diabetes.
Also *** lantus was for. No one ever explained that.
Can't believe I allowed myself to be so ignorant. My own fault.
Now I have a different life.
Anyhoo - yep lchf as a type 1.

That low carb , high fat can actually cause cholesterol problems (in certain people) and too much protein can affect kidney function. I jumped straight on the LCHF bandwagon after diagnosis and it had some side effects after a few years.

That it is such a variable disease that the nurses and doctors are in truth only able to help at a basic level and you are best of becoming your own expert in your own body.

Lchf for me forever mate. YMMV - I have cholesterol of 7.3 but because my ratios are good the consultant recommends I don't take the statins I have always refused to take anyway.

I believe that omega 6 polyunsaturated fats consumed in excess are believed to be the only type of fat to negatively affect cholesterol balance. I'll try and find some studies when I'm back on the desktop :)

Yes definately the low carb point for helping stabilise blood sugars.

- I would of also appreciated being told not to beat myself up for not getting perfect BG readings, I came out of my diagnosis believing I had to get between 5 and 8mmol/l, so anytime I ran high I put myself under huge pressure to try and get it right.

- Also the advice to take care of my teeth, have had a few infections which have affected my control, and also that being a woman, having a monthly cycle would also affect my control, took me ages to work that one out.

I had a unknown hereditary cholesterol problem brewing and low carb high/ fat diet tipped it over the edge. I should have modified my statement "in certain people" to "those susceptible to cholesterol problems" or something like that :-)

You always hear of the low carb success stories but mine wasn't one. After 1 year of 'high carbing' my HB1AC is the same.

I just want to note that excessive protein consumption MAY have negative effects if you already have CKD. However, there is no (conclusive) evidence to suggest that it is harmful to a normal healthy kidney.

.............. and what is your source of information ??

Very interesting. In my case I had no CKD prior to low carbing but did see a reduction in kidney function (not serious but enough to question).

I'm having another blood test in March so I can see how the kidney function has evolved since I gave up LC over 1 year ago. My money is on it has improved :-)

When I was eating loads of protein, my eGFR was worse than I was eating slightly less, but I test my urine for protein and I wasn't (and still am not) seeing any. The tests that I had done didn't show up particular issues with kidney function.
