I'm newly diagnosed Type 2 few weeks ago now , Doc didn't even mention testing BGs, but as I have read many bits on here and lots of other stuff I feel I would like to test (not looking forward to it) but just so I know where I am. Can anybody suggest a good meter, I did look at the Accu Check Mobile, but when you read the blurb it suggests that it is for insulin users.
Many meters have functionality which is superfluous to T2s. That doesn't mean to say they're not appropriate, it just means they have features we'd never use.
One governing factor for many of us is the cost of strips for the meter. All meters cost about the same, and are a one-off cost. The repeatable cost is the strips, which can vary quite a lot. As initially, if you're like the rest of us, you're going to be tesing a fair bit, it makes sense to give this factor consideration.
Most of the big drug companies' strips run at around £20 - £25 for a tub of 50. The can be sourced cheaper on ebay, but that's not necessarily a consistent supply chain. many of us have therefore elected to use a meter called the SD Codefree, from a company called Homehealth. They list of eBay, Amazon and their own website. Personally, I buy direct from their website as I can get a discount for modest bulk buying. But, cutting to the chase, their strips are £6.99 for 50, or just over £5 for 50, when you buy in multiples of 5 tubs. I'm sure you'll agree that's quite a saving.
All meters have their pros and cons, but for those of us not using insulin, seeing our blood trends are at least as important as the absolute number.
