I'm newly diagnosed Type 2 few weeks ago now , Doc didn't even mention testing BGs, but as I have read many bits on here and lots of other stuff I feel I would like to test (not looking forward to it) but just so I know where I am. Can anybody suggest a good meter, I did look at the Accu Check Mobile, but when you read the blurb it suggests that it is for insulin users.

i use the codefree monitor and found their strips to be the cheapest to use

Many meters have functionality which is superfluous to T2s. That doesn't mean to say they're not appropriate, it just means they have features we'd never use.

One governing factor for many of us is the cost of strips for the meter. All meters cost about the same, and are a one-off cost. The repeatable cost is the strips, which can vary quite a lot. As initially, if you're like the rest of us, you're going to be tesing a fair bit, it makes sense to give this factor consideration.

Most of the big drug companies' strips run at around £20 - £25 for a tub of 50. The can be sourced cheaper on ebay, but that's not necessarily a consistent supply chain. many of us have therefore elected to use a meter called the SD Codefree, from a company called Homehealth. They list of eBay, Amazon and their own website. Personally, I buy direct from their website as I can get a discount for modest bulk buying. But, cutting to the chase, their strips are £6.99 for 50, or just over £5 for 50, when you buy in multiples of 5 tubs. I'm sure you'll agree that's quite a saving.

All meters have their pros and cons, but for those of us not using insulin, seeing our blood trends are at least as important as the absolute number.

Have a look on www.homehealth-uk.com . As a diagnosed diabetic, you are eligible to buy without paying VAT.

I started with the Accu-chek Mobile. It is very easy to use, with no handling of strips in separate tubs because the strips are in a cassette, which you just put in the meter. It also comes with an Accu-chek Fast Clix pen for the lancets. All very easy, and convenient for carrying round. However, the replacement cassettes are £25 each (50 strips) from pharmacies. This was becoming very expensive, even buying from Ebay at less than half price. I ended up buying an SD Codefree from Home Health, and now pay just over £5 for 50. I still use the Accu-chek Fastclix pen though as it is much preferable to the lancets provided by Codefree. You can buy these pens separately from the meter, and also the replacement lancet drums. I would recommend them.

Thank you all for this, I had lost my replies went into folder I did not expect, so went ahead and bought the code free, but also bought 100 lancets.
\\\disd look at the Accu-Chek Mobile but decided it was too expensive as the moment. Dreading it the finger pricking but will have to be done, unit turned up at lunchtime.
Thanks to everyone

Don't panic about the testing, there's a video on how to do it on this page http://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-testing.html

After a few times it will become second nature. Start with the needle setting at the lowest number and increase it until it will just prick you enough to draw a drop of blood. The lancets will last for ages, you don't need to change them each time although some do. I change mine about once a week - if I remember!

Has to be the a accuchek mobile for me. I have it on prescription. But so easy when you are out and about.
If I had to pay it would be the codefree. Yep. That's right. I'm cheap
