What is "occasional"?

When I was diagnosed (and in lots of literature I read) I was told I could have occasional treats such as cake, biscuits etc.

Just what is "occasional"? I ask diabetic nurse at my annual reviews and always get the same answer - she doesn't know and I know more than her (very helpful!)

I have assumed three to four times a year? Birthday, Christmas Day, Easter etc

What is your view?

Yes this is a personal thing really isn't it? I agree with your definition of occasional, though others will undoubtedly have other ideas on the subject.

I guess it depends on the food in question and your meter. I'd hope that when I lose my weight that some things like a small jacket potato or a spoonful or two of brown rice might be an occasional meal accompaniment , say once a week or fortnightly depending on blood sugars. The likes of cakes, biscuits etc, I'd say birthday or Christmas, same with a bag of crisps, maybe an ice cream once on holiday. So many things are just empty calories and I'd hate to go back to mindlessly consuming food as that is what got me here before.

I am reminded of my old next door neighbour, a very large immobile diabetic lady who had cakes on a Saturday because it was Saturday, and fish and chips on a Tuesday because she was allowed an occasional treat - it worked out that she had something every day !

Occasional will be different to many people and should be not so regular that it becomes the norm but regular enough to look forward to. Be governed by your conscience and your BG levels :-)

I can't have biscuits in the house, 1 leads to 1 packet which leads to another. I avoid buying them now.

I think it also depends on how the foods would affect you. I feel rotten when my bg is high so eating a regular cake would not be such a treat for me :( I prefer to make my own these days...tastes like a treat but without the spike.
