Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.
At the moment mine is eyesight / retinopathy. Since waking up today I have blurred vision and it's horrible. I don't know if it's diabetes-related or not, but if poor glycaemic control leads to not being able to see things clearly, I better pull my socks up and get with the program!

What works for you?

My lovely grandmother, who was diagnosed with diabetes after multiple heart attacks aged 83, went completely blind and finally died from kidney failure. I have no intention of following in her footsteps.

My 4 year old boy, my new baby due in October and of course my wife. That's all I need to be motivated to control my BG and not get any problems.

Scared stiff of complications

I'm only 43, the thought of years and years of ever increasing health issues definately got my **** into gear.

If I can do anything to reduce the risks I will, hopefully the willpower/motivation I've been enjoying since Dec last year will last me long, long into the future.

am now 40, years and years of poor control coupled with no control have taken a physical toll already most of which now I am sorting myself can be reversed

As for motivation, being there for my children, too many plans I want to follow through, and finding a huge amount of autonomy.

BUT!! oh boy do I miss biscuits

Biggest motivator? Our Diabetic Specialist GP, who is convinced that low-carb high-fat is the WRONG way to manage Type 2. I intend to outlive her 8) .

More seriously, I am determined to control my diabetes so that it has the fewest possible long-term effects on me. It has kicked me into a serious life-style change, and is in fact the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Wanting to have children one day and the fact that I have four horses who rely on me so I need to be healthy for them.

I was diagnosed on our daughter's 28th birthday, which was the day that she and her OH announced that they were getting married next year.
I want to be around to be the 'mother of the bride' and welcome grandchildren into the world.
And because of the inspiration from other members of the forum I should do it in clothes that are 3 or 4 times smaller than when diagnosed (I've already dropped 2 dress sizes).
The energy, self confidence and progress that I have had since diagnosis, is pretty good motivation for me :D

I could say it's the weight I've lost or the ability to swim 40 lengths rather than 4. But at the beginning of the year honestly felt that I was falling apart with symptoms that I thought ranged from arthritis to stomach cancer and all I could think about was that I'd only been married 3 years and how unfair it was that I wouldn't grow old with Mrs S .

So it's that thought and, of course, this forum.

Thanks Noblehead. The blurring has decreased, but I am going to get it checked out this week. It's scary when you can't make your eyes focus on things.

For me, it is how keeping control of these things improve my quality of life. I'm a sucker for immediate rewards. If I don't pay attention, I'll be fussy, have headaches, be tired, too hot... When I do have my eye on the ball, I have all the energy in the world and can do whatever I want, really.
