In the north of England their used to be a tradition at Whitsontide (now known as May bank holiday) when all the church's walked through the streets ( all dressed up in their new clothes )bands, from boy scouts to pipers led the walkers, cubs, girl guides, brownies, boys brigade, huge church banners with ribbons flowing for the children to hold, baskets of flowers also with ribbons attached for each child. Rose queens princesses .....oh how I wanted to be a princess, just for one day and wear a beautiful dress and a tiara. Then one year because I attended every Sunday school in the year I was chosen as a petal thrower....not quite a princess but I still got to wear a pretty dress and I was as high as a kite for weeks. 6 year olds were so easy to please back then and I could not have been happier
