Needlephobia giving insulin
Hi, just to let you know, I am getting a new long acting insulin on the 4th of August this year as my current one isn't working. Of course I'll have what the hospital gives, as I do not know and won't until the 4th. What long acting insulin works for you and NO I don't want to ask for that I'll get what the hospital wants me to have as they know and I don't
Hi there
I'm on Lantus once a day in the evenings and it's now being supplemented with NovoRapid for evening meal which seems to be working. I'm new to basal insulin and short acting insulin esp NovoRapid still coming to terms with it. Doesn't help I have needle phobia and use a no look technique to give insulin.

Because I have also had a stroke and are not good with numbers my support team lets me calculate NovoRapid dose by blood sugar results pre meal. Seems to be working well so far

@nathanw777,

Many forum members have shared their experiences (myself included) with almost all basal insulins currently available on the UK market today - in order to help you.

That is why I am here, by the way, to help others with what I can.

And my advice still stands, it would be worthwhile having a go at a split dose and trying a basal rate test to make sure you're not missing anything obvious. If in doubt, your DSN may be able to help out:

Good luck to you @nathanw777, I hope to see you around more regularly:)
I thought you weren't a fan.

I think I've missed something here @nathanw777, not a fan of basal insulin or something else?
of me. The hospital don't do that. The hospital gives advice and suggestions. I only posted this post because I was wondering what you guys use. Not to ask for that item. It's up to the hospital I go to.

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
Hello @nathanw777 - I was on Tresiba before the pump, I found Tresiba to be excellent, one injection a day, very stable, however I asked to go on it as Levemir was not working for me despite being on a split does and I was increasing my units regularly and was running high levels, Tresiba changed all that.

Alot of members find that they want to be in control of their type 1 rather than handing the reigns to their medical team, simply because we live with it and therefore we know what works and what doesn't, so it's empowering yourself to become an expert and learn as much as you can. 'Think like a pancreas' is an excellent read if you are interested in learning more. On the forum we can all speak from experience but we can also learn from others about what works for them and what doesn't so it's useful to ask any questions you like here without fear of being judged or trivialised, we are all here to help :)

Nope, I never said that:)

You've said it yourself @nathanw777:

They will advise and suggest on a form of treatment that is best for you, from the information you provide them. If you put a strong case towards a specific type of basal insulin because of criteria X, Y and Z - they will take that on-board. I've done it myself.

We did try managing it well, I did manage to stay alive and treat my hypos and sometimes highs depending on how high it is. It's just not working out so that's why mum calls the hospital. They said to change insulin. I don't choose the hospital usually does like they chose my Levemir. Levemir was not working like it should so that's why I'm changing it. They didn't want me to choose and I presume the same will happen. I go to the one in Bury St. Edmunds.

I have clinic dates and follow the routine usually. They have my height measured and they have my weight measured and they record my sugar thing (can't remember what it's called) and then I see a doctor who'll talk to us and check my sites of injection. A doctor will give me my new long acting insulin and a new pen if required.

Do let us know how you get on Nathan and whether your new insulin works out for you:)

The forum thrives on user feedback, so if you some things (good or bad) to say qboit your new basal insulin then it may help others in your situation if you provide some feedback.

Good luck!

Thanks. I will reply to you when I get my insulin and see if I can stop comments, not to be mean, but to stop suggestions that I won't need. Otherwise I'll put a reply saying stop commenting please. ;)

Hi @nathanw777 The good thing is that you and your mum are on top of this, so you can see what's working and what isn't and your team is supporting you too which is brilliant - good luck with the new insulin, let us know how you get on :)

Suggest you slow down and read what was actually posted. You asked for information on basals that people use. That is exactly what I gave you, I made no recommendation or inference that this is something you should ask for!

How so if I can ask? Lantus doesn't last anywhere near to morning for me. So the whole day I rely on humalog. I need to inject and eat every two to three hours. DP stinks but could be worse. Here's my schedule
8 am ish 1 unit. Lettuce wrap with mayo mustRd thin slice turkey
9 1 unit to stop the morning rise
11:30-12 1/2 unit. Snack sized meal
2:30-3 1/2 unit snack sized meal
5:00 cheese and wine 1/2 unit
6:30 dinner 1 unit

I stay steady until about 5 am 1 unit lantus. After 5 I rise about 30 before I get up at 8. This schedule works for me but sometimes I'm not hungry and have to eat because if I don't I'll just rise without taking insulin. If I take insulin without food I drop. I'd like to just eat when hungry and inject. Not having to eat every 2.5-3 hours if not convenient.
Seeing endo Monday. No thanks even sure we have your cool insulins here yet lol
