What meters does everyone use

I will use whatever I can get free with few test strips thrown in although the meter I always come back to is my trusty Accu-Chek Aviva.

I've got 3 right now, which is probably excessive, but it's often useful to check one against the other, especially while I'm starting out testing every little mouse fart for its effect on my blood.

Accuchek Mobile - the most reliable, but also the most expensive to keep up. I only use it when I can source cheap cassettes from ebay.

Accuchek Performa - again, I use it when there's a deal on for strips. It's the fastest reader of the 3, the most convenient to use and carry. Reads marginally higher than the Accuchek Mobile, and will occasionally spazz out and give you a crazy high reading.

SD Codefree - has a habit of going wildly off-course with consistently high readings for half a day (checked against the other meters) but then coming back down to earth later on. Can't figure out what's skewing the results. This unit has the cheapest strips, but with so many false highs, it could be a false economy.

I was told I was type 2 in a oh by the way because you are diabetic type conversation with my gp due to something completely unrelated, prescribed metformin and statins and told to come back for repeat bloods in 3 months. I was gobsmacked! There was no mention of getting a meter, so I wangled a free one from spirit healthcare but I have to buy my own lancets and strips. Did anyone else experience anything like this?

My GP wouldn't give me strips until I told him I'd had hypos, and for all intents and purposes I'm a Type 1. That shocked me.

I have had two meters given to me 15 months ago by the nurse and the GP. AccuChek Active and Glucolab. The first one I prefer as it looks good and the results are at least two points less than the Glucolab. For some reason though it's the Glucolab I use.

One Touch Verio IQ until recently, then after a Dafne type course I switched, as advised to a Accu Chek Aviva Expert. My latest toy is the Freestyle Libre.

Wondering why you were advised to change from the One Touch Verio IQ. It's what I've been using since funding out I am pre-diabetic 6 months ago, mainly to track fbs, along with a food and exercise diary - plus occasional post-meal checks on suspect foods. Is it not considered to be reliable? Thanks, Maxine in Canada

I guess I'm lucky. My doctor didn't prescribe anything except HbA1c testing ever 3 mo, so I bought strips (meter came free! ) and lancets. Then I discovered that my husband's Blue Cross (suplemental health insurance through his work ) covers 80% of the cost of diabetic supplies, prescribed or not. Bought myself new running shoes with my first refund!

Nothing wrong with the Verio IQ, great little meter. I was doing a danfe course and the Accu Chek Expert has a built in bolus advisor which we were encouraged to use.

As I have said previously I have several meters but have been using the code free mostly but this Friday ran out of strips and was too late to order more for today so bought some strips for my Gluco Rx. Thought it may read some what differently to the Codefree but readings are exactly consistent with what I was getting with the Codefree gives me more confidence in the readings I have been getting over the last few weeks.

I use the GlucoRX Nexus provided by my GP Practise plus 100 Test Strips & Lancets Free because I take Insulin/Metformin. My GP Practise refused to issue me with Test Strips & Lancets for my Contour Next well over a year ago.
But, If in the future I need to buy a Meter and Strips? I would definitely go for the popular SD Codefree Blood Glucose Meter used by members on here as it has the cheapest Test Strips to buy, and even cheaper if bought in bulk.

I don't know how home health do it but hope they continue doing it low cost meter low cost strips and as good as meters and strips that cost so much more.

Dario Smart meter for me. It's so small and integrates with my smartphone which is a real game changer.

As a guy, having less "stuff" in my pockets is the priority and this device makes that entirely possible. Moreover, the strips are actually cheaper than my prior Glucomen LX PLUS meter. So I'm happier and the NHS is saving a bit too which is most important

I was given the accu check aviva nano from the Company at a meeting at my GP, but the strips are really expensive here in DK, almost 1£ a piece , so I buy them in Germany intead where the Price is 1/3 of the danish Price. But well I am very happy for it though

I have 2 meters. The AccuChek Mobile and the Codefree. When I do comparison checks I find them much the same whether pre-meal or post meal. I only use the Codefree for my own records and trend spotting. The AccuChek is in a drawer, only used in emergencies and for those odd comparison checks. The replacement cassettes are too expensive to use all the time, although you can get some bargains on Ebay.

I like the Codefree. It is compact, easy to use, and has the cheapest strips, but I always use the AccuChek lancet pen (best on the market)
