Hi All

Tested my sugars at 7.30am and it was 4.6 which I feel is very good.I had a bowl of All Bran with blueberries and 1 apple and 6 units of novarapid. I then tested my sugars at 9.45am and it was 11.4 (not happy) Just been for a 6.5 mile run and my sugars are 3.6. Im a bit confused because normally my exercise doesnt really effect my sugars until around 6hrs after and also Im not really sure what should happen to my sugars when Ive eaten? Is it normal for sugars to rise quite high and then gradually drop with the insulin or should the insulin taken after a meal kick in straight away keeping sugars level. Was my problem not having enough novarapid? Im trying to reduce my insulin intake so Ive reduced my carbs by quite alot but seem to be having a few teething problems??

Hi Rich,

Well, that's breakfast cereals for you! It's taken you from a perfect blood glucose level to a very harmful one in under 2 hours. Way to go, Kellogg's!
I think your bg level came right down after your run as a result of the excercise which 'wakes up' the insulin receptors on the muscles and pulls all the glucose out of your bloodstream for fuel.
Insulin will often have to fight a rearguard action like this when there are refined carbohydrates in the diet. It can't act quickly enough to counter the rise and will have to work to lower it later. It's not a healthy state of affairs and can be largely avoided - if you cut the carbs!

All the best,

Cheers for that Fergus. The main thing that I am concerned about going on a very low carb diet is that Id be mainly eating protein? Or do eat a normal amount of daily protein but up my veg and fruits to get my energy souces? Also Im not too sure about including lots of fat in my diet as suggested in some posts?

Hi Rich,

You don't have to eat any more protein than you're comfortable with. By all means eat as many veggies as you like and if you use things like buter, cream, cheese, olive oil you'll get good sources of perfectly healthy fats too.
The things to restrict are the nutritionally very poor starches which do nothing for you other than screw up your blood sugar levels. Just like this morning!

All the best,

fergus
