What should be the fasting blood sugars and how many times can we test per day

Hi @ginaglad

If you are recently diagnosed, you'll find many are looking to be at 5 or maybe 4 when testing first thing each day...(the FBG)

However that is the last to go down.

Mine stepped down over a few months from a 9 down to a 5.

Most test pre meal & then again post meal (usually at the 2 hour limit to establish if they spike excessively)

But some will also test at one hour or 3 hours, as some foods are slower to spike us .

Throw in how often some eat ...
A few will be one meal a day (OMAD), personally I eat 2 meals a day at moment.(2MAD)

And when I started, I tested almost everything I ate, so that's a lot early on....which is normal.

How often you test is determined by the foods you eat, how often you eat, whether you test before bed as well as on waking
(I don't personally )

So testing at minimum could be 3 times a day or any number above that, that YOU see as useful.

You are looking to establish the foods that spike YOU.
And once you satisfy yourself which meals or foods are ok for YOU

You'll test less, as some meals won't need testing anymore.

Though it is a good idea to randomly test such meals once in a while, just to be sure nothings changed.

Good luck finding a way that works for you.

Hi @ginaglad
When I started on a Low Carb way of eating (never counted calories) I just tested before and after each meal at first (just before and then 2hrs after). Aiming to have no big a spike than 2.0 mmols and an overall maximum reading of about 8.0 mmols.
I tend to have a case of a big Dawn phenomenon, so even 2 yrs into remission my fasting BG is still around 6.5 to 7 mmol (though I only test it about once per month now.
I cut down on testing drastically as I learned which carbohydrate foods in which quantities my body was happy with. Testing one day per week or more.
One I became 'fat adapted' I was no longer hungry in the mornings, so now i tend to eat 2 meals a day on weekdays and just 1 meal per day (OMAD) on weekends.
The important thing to do is to make your routine sustainable, find what your body likes for both low carb food and for your routine. That way you won't 'fall off the wagon' - at least not often - and when/if you do it will be easier to get back to 'your new routine' again.
