What time of day do you take your lantus?

Great question. I currently 'take' my Lantus at 10pm - however I don't know if this is the best time for me. If I'm out I'll invariably forget or, because I take it in my thigh (I'm a wimp and can't contemplate sticking 32 units into my stomach), find it impossible to find a toilet clean enough to brave taking it in!

How difficult would it now be for me to start taking my dosage in the mornings?

Not difficult at all, you can take lantus any time of the day as long as you leave 24 hours between injections. You start by moving the timing of your dose back by 3 hours at a time so that it doesn't overlap too much, I would move it to 7pm for two days then 4pm for two more and so on until you reach the time that you are happy to take the lantus injection, just be sure to test your bg more frequently when you do move the timing, if in doubt speak with your DSN.

Also, try using your bum as well as your thighs for injecting your lantus insulin.

Thank you - that's very helpful. In 24 years I've never injected my bum - despite my having a lot of bum! Like I said, I'm a wimp - gonna give it a go tonight though ;-)

Cheers

You may find it difficult at first, but be assured it does become easier once you've done it a few times :)

Take a look at the following for where you can inject insulin:

@noblehead - that link is really interesting... I inject my long acting into my backside - but I use the fleshier bits - ie lower - than this pic recommends... Do you know why they recommend higher up...? Have I been injecting 'bum shots'; literally... ;-) :D

As long as the insulin has absorbed well and your bg control was fine don't worry about it Artemis, I would think they want us to inject higher up the bum as we don't want to be injecting in the area where we park ourselves, not really sure tbh :)

One possible reason for taking it before bed is because Lantus takes about 2-3 hours to reach full strength, and so if your experiencing the dawn phenomenon, then your basal will be helping as much as it can at that point in the morning before waking, waking and into the rest of the morning........

Lantus does not act for 24 hours so it can be quite critical when u take it - just whatever suits you best. A lot of people seem to be moving over to levemir and having two doses per 24 hours but I am fine with lantus at the moment which I take at 11pm.
