I am posting this on behalf of my husband. We are new on here and at our wits end. My husband age 50 was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 1 year ago. He was told to loose weight exercise and look at his diet. No medications were prescribed. He was really unhappy about the diagnosis and took some convincing he had diabetes. Anyway did as he was advised and his hba1c came down. However about 3 months ago he lost his appetite for no apoarent reason and lost 2 stone in weight. Even now he eats very little . He refused to see a Gp about it as sees the weight loss as a good thing. I started at this time to notice a strange smell coming from his mouth and he gets episodes of slurred speech , not knowing where he is and feeling off balance, Again he refused to see a doctor just thinking its one of those things. About 3 weeks ago a colleague accused him of drinking alcohol in work because of this smell and he is now suspended pending an investigating! He is teetotal!! I am absolutely convinced this is something to do with diabetes he isnt so sure, so I have bought a bm machine and they are high even if he doesnt eat. Readings mostly over 13.I am at my wits end and if I could show him what I have written on here and the comments we can start getting it sorted out. He thinks it cannot be diabetes causing this as he eats very little, please help we are very confused

Hi claireabelle1 I am definitely no expert but I can sense how worried you are, and hopefully some one with the knowledge will answer soon, it sounds like he is having hypo's but please don't take that as I know he really should see his GP for both your peace of mind hugs to you.

Hi. Although at 50 it is less likely than a younger age I would be suspicious of possible Late onset Type 1 diabetes? I would get some Ketone sticks from the chemist or web and check for ketones in the blood. If ketones are present together with high blood sugar then your husband must seek medical advice urgently and if necessary go to A&E; the strange smell you mention could well be the sweet smell of ketones. High ketones and blood sugar together can be dangerous if not treated promptly, usually with insulin. It may be your husband has some other condition but do at least check ketones or get the GP or A&E to do it. In the meantime ensure your husband has plenty of water and keep trying to get him to seek treatment; the ketone sticks may (or may not) prove the need.

As Daibell has stated, it might be Diabetic Ketoacidosis and the smell on the breath might be acetone:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketoacidos ... physiology

In diabetic patients, ketoacidosis is usually accompanied by insulin deficiency, hyperglycemia, and dehydration. Don't just hope it will go away, you should go see someone. A trip to A&E is worth it if only to get some documentation to counter the silliness at work.

It's worth knowing that the other common form of Ketoacidosis is Alcoholic Ketoacidosis so your hubby will at least be able to tease the colleague with, 'it takes one to know one', whilst adding that his own version is legit.

Thank you for your speedy replies. H has booked an appointment with the GP for next week and I will pick uomsome ketone sticks tommorrow. My hubby loves the quote about the alcoholic ketoacidosis and will be throwing it in a certain direction with a few other nice little comments!
