Type 2 What to expect on first doctors appointment since being T2 diagnosed

Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Hi.

I was diagnosed on Tues 4th July so recent. I got pit straight on Metformin by the nurse and asked to make an appt with my Gp on Weds 12th.
I am quite apprehensive about what to expect during my first consultation. I am used to visiting my GP due to mental health and high Bp diagnosis.
Is there any questions I should be asking and is it worth asking for a testing machine?

I assume you have been diagnosed as Type 2. Do you know what your HbA1c figure is? If not you should get it before you see the GP. It should be available online, if not you should ask for a printout of the test results.

Edit: When you see your GP, he/she might suggest you take medication, probably metafornin. It depends on how high your reading is. You can decline and say you would like to try to lower your bs by diet and exercise.
Your GP should ask if you want to be referred for a diabetes management course.
The GP should also refer you to the practice Diabetic Nurse for neuropathy test, and dietary advice. The diabetic Nurse will also refer you for a retinopathy eye test.
You should also be told to make an appointment for another HbA1c blood test in 3 months to confirm the diagnosis.

Yep my HbA1c was 58 all she said is it should be 48 or below but nothing else other than take the tablets one a day!

Don't worry I'll tag @daisy1 to give you all the info you might need. Take a deep breath and don't panic. You have come to the right place

Hiya

I was diagnosed about a month ago now and had a follow up appointment.the one I had was just a 15 min chat about my lifestyle and how I had to change it took my blood pressure which is high. asked me if I would like to join a biabetes group which I refused then prescribed me ramipril and metformin. She also referred me to an optician for diabetes scan which was fine and a ultrasound which was fine I think although still waiting for result. So don't worry it's more of a chat than anything else.

Good luck

OK, well 58 isn't very high. You could reduce that by changing your diet, before your 3 month retest.
Many of us on here have found that adopting a Low Carbohydrate High Fat (LCHF) approach to eating has reduced our bs levels.

It is always worth asking for a testing machine. They can only say no and sometimes say yes.

In addition to those things mentioned above, I was also offered a gym referral at a discounted price. This might vary from area to area. Good luck :)

Hello Liam and welcome to the Forum :) Here in my signature is the link to the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. I posted it for you on Thursday on another thread. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

Hi and welcome. Do ask for a meter but I suspect you won't be given one. Being on Metformin is fine as it's a good, safe drug but doesn't have dramatic effects on blood sugar. Do go for the low-carb diet. Beware NHS or any diet advice or dieticians. They tend to follow the ridiculous Eat Well Plate which is high in carbs. The advice on these forums is from people who have diabetes and know what works. You will be offered at least annual surgery reviews and probably more frequently to start with. You will need blood and urine tests each time and arrange these around 2 weeks before your review so you can discuss results at the review. Before you leave this review go away with blood and urine test forms and agree the rough time for the next review which you may need to book-up. Good luck.
