Last night my bg was 6.9, this morning 7.4 - I left it an hour without eating to see what it would do and it went up to 7.8.

It is likely to rise in the morning. You also have to be aware that the meters aren’t that accurate +\-1 I believe. So you can take a reading of 6, then immediately after could be 5 or 7.
