What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

After a stressful day am finding it impossible to get to sleep. Feeling both too hot and cold all at the same time.
This morning not enough time to tell of last night's inundation before we had to leave for the (unsuccessful) kitchen shopping. Huge storm, torrential rain and hail. Poor Kiki was terrified out of her tiny wits, couldn't find a safe place outside, running from shed to table to work bench trying to find cover - not thinking to come inside until I had called her several times.
Meanwhile the rain has once again found its way into the house. Pouring into the cellar in three different places and getting into the loft as well. We have been waiting to get a firm date for the work needed on the roof for over two months now. MrSlim is furious about it.
There are two vents into the cellar, one at street level in the front and another on the back. Rain cascaded in through both, but also came under the kitchen floor and down the wall. Tried putting a bucket under the flow, but was impossible to get one in the right place.


Here you can see where two of the streams join together this us taken before all three converged to make a mini lake down there.
The floor being clay it mostly soaked in overnight, but may take months to dry out. After our kitchen shopping (that's another story), MrSlim and HH started digging up the terrace, to find out where the water under the floor was coming from. Several hours later after experiments with hosepipe in different pipes and gutters, the source of the water was identified. The downpipe from the rear half of the roof went into a channel, not even a pipe, through the back wall under the kitchen and then out through the side wall into our neighbours drive.
At some point various stone and bricks were inserted into the exit hole, not blocking it completely but definitely impeding the flow. Then it's a u shaped channel of course it overflows and follows the path of least resistance, eventually finding its way into the cellar.
Solution. Force the downpipe water into the drain that runs across the back of the house. Which, on inspection proved to be too short to meet up with the mains drainage system. So HH is now chopping his way through the concrete path down the side of the house to find the mains drain into the town rainwater system.
Am going to shop for dehumidifier now.

One of our lovely neighbours came round yesterday morning to show us a text from her friend warning her of a fake DWP text going around asking people to click on a link to input their bank details to claim their winter fuel allowance.

It is so sad that there are so.many scams going on at the moment. I think I read in the newspaper that 1 in 7 people have been caught out by scams in the past year.

Had such a lovely lunch with my ex-colleague yesterday. Then 2 really good classes afterwards. There was a lovely breeze which kept the hall cool.

This morning it is admin in the office with my sister

11.9 at 04.50 today. Another high one with no apparent reason.

Wet and windy today. Not the best of days, but then we are in the Hebrides which, when the weather is good (not all that often) is wonderful, but most of the time the weather isn't good. When we first came to see the place, in March 1974, the weather had been sunny for weeks already, so we didn't get an accurate impression. We didn't realise that some years wouldn't produce a summer at all. It's still a good place to live, as long as you don't want a suntan or want much of a garden.

Having said that we can't have much of a garden, we do have a lot of shrubs along the front of the house, right alongside the entrance ramp, which house, on still days, hundreds of flies. So, after advice from Gennepher I am putting lots of mint plants along the side of the ramp to try to deter them. My one mint plant (spearmint) is struggling and needs repotting, which I will do shortly and 3 new plants have just arrived in the post - grapefruit mint. Never heard of that one, but worth seeing how they do. I have others coming in the next week or so, but will put these out today and make a start and hope the wind doesn't blow them away.

Down into town early this morning and a good job too as the trees and bushes are going mental in this wind, blowing about like some large orange pest in a White House looking for a lost brain cell.
Art bit, quick sketch, a few people on the beach, not really getting this. Never mind. Kept my mind off bank robbery or shouting at unruly clouds.
Hope your day has at least a few moments of sunshine in it. Got to go and squirt goo into my eyes now and hope that nothing jumps out of a wall or doorway and belts me one as I fumble about like blind Pugh wondering where I put The Black Spot.

They definitely have a very strong minty scent, but can't smell the grapefruit myself. Maybe the flies can though. Thanks for that information Gennepher. I'll try the other ideas as well (put grapefruit peels around the doors and windows, see if I can get grapefruit and mint oil to make a spray). I wonder if spiders dislike mint and grapefruit as much.

HH arrived and is immediately back onto the drains modification started yesterday.
Delivery of dishwasher and fridge freezer went well, but the later arrival of a velux window caused chaos in this small town on a market day. One side of the traffic circulation is closed, lorry reversing and blocking the open side, all traffic at a standstill. Market visitors all standing watching and enjoying the show. Bit embarrassing really. Lorry is blocking street and an elderly couple parked outside our house are trapped behind it. Feel obliged to apologise for the inconvenience, but they are kind about it.
Window is on a pallet and 100kg. Far too heavy to lift up steps into house, so i sign and driver abandons it on the pavement. Freeing the trapped couple.
MrSlim and HH unload pallet and carry the separate boxes into the house. Friends have arrived to take me out to coffee, so leave them to it.
Drain modifications complete, window is removed from its box as too large to fit up stairs! Is that really the size ordered? Huge and heavy it's difficult for two men to get it up to second floor. Can't imagine how it will be installed.
Artisans are coming Tuesday for that.
One of my friends brought cakes. Little ones in paper cases, strawberry and vanilla. Very nice too. Gone in six bites.
Checked BG before eating and again after One and two hours.

After one hour 10.6
Two hours 5.4 again.
Have never really understood how much of a rise is considered acceptable. Or how much is a spike. Can anyone explain?

Yes, mate. Mrs L is on more anti-biotics again.
One of the diabetic drugs is known to cause thrush.

high FBG for me this am 7.8mmols.
Stress is sending it too high. I have to expect that, how the next couple of weeks will help I hope.

Eldest son birthday, 45 (eek!)
They are having a weekend out in @gennepher country. Hope it is warmer than last night, down to 12degrees. Ridiculous for late June.
Still cloudy but not as windy

Garden and roses growing wild. So many caterpillars about, plenty of butterflys. Black v white birds on the footie pitches. Dawn chorus did wake me very loud.

If your intolerance is subject to the cake, lots of quick glucose into the blood, the insulin you produced supply, may not be enough to stop the spike from going that high so quickly, and your pancreas may have to produce more to bring it back down to your pre meal range.overproduction and circulating insulin is never that good.
too much glucose is not good, too much insulin is not good. Keeping the spikes under control is always better. This is why low carb is good for you.
my spike is around 45 minutes. And with cake, my BG levels will always be above 12mmols around the spike. Because I have a weak first phase insulin response. So I try to eat very low carbs to keep my BG levels in the normal (ish) zone. (I refer it to my glorious zone) Not too high, not too low, just right for me.
so no cake for me!
along with a lot of other carbs and sugars. And dairy cos of my lactose intolerance.

We only have midges. No mossies so far. I'm hoping midges don't like mint either.
