Type of diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with type 2 a week ago, my husband has been a type 2 for around 10 years and I would occasionally use his monitor and the readings seemed fine , so it was a bit of a shock !
I have been prescribed 500mg of metformin twice a day , but to just take 1 for the first week .
I have been keeping to a pretty low carb diet , mainly because I have no appetite and the thought of food makes me want to heave ( no other gastric issues tho ) I have been testing regulary and my BS readings seem to be between 4.5 and 5.5 .
If I start taking the 2nd tablet now will i feel worse / eat even less , tbh Im hardly eating anything , but have read not to worry about that and would my BS go too low ?
Or am I talking rubbish lol

thank you

metformin as I know do help the best when you eat something... ... you blood glucose level is fine, but then again you hardly eat...

I lost my appetite when getting the chock of diabetes myself , but slowly after some weeks I started to relax a bit... If you are overweight you could use this period to loose some kg...

but do think you must tell the nurse how litlle you eat, as it gives a wrong picture if the metformin is adequate or not...

usually diabetic 2 do not get too low as their insuline is not working good enough to get glucose down that low... metformine does not in itself get blood glucose that low...but then again you do not eat much ...

how high was your blood glucose initially..?

oh it is the metformine taking away your appetite.... well most troubles with metformin goes away after some weeks ...

I can't remember what the blood test reading was , and I don't get to see the nurse now until the 17th October. I realise once I start to eat more the readings may rise, depending on how many carbs I eat.I guess at the moment I'm too scared to eat many, plus this general ickyness isn't much fun.I have been looking for low cArb recipes but none really appeal , so once my appetite comes back I will go with what I've always eaten , but alter it to have much less carbs .most of the Google hits seem to be for American recipes , and I'm not a fan of brown food
I may just wait a bit longer before adding the 2nd tablet .

I could of course be in denial and think somehow I have failed and taking 2 tablets is the slippy slope to a lifetime of more and more pills

yes who wouldn´t hope it was a mistake...

if you like nuts you could eat some untill you figure out what you would like to eat in you new menu... most nuts don´t raise blood glucose much.... but a handfull a day...

Yes I really lost my appetite when I started on Metformin. I was already a skinny minnie and because I was not eating enough I did loose weight that I didn't need to With my doctors approval I have now decreased my dosage to one 500gm of the slow release Metformin a day and my appetite has started to come back. I really think I had forgotten what it felt like to feel hungry abut I am beginning to feel it again now

Feeling as you do at the moment is not unusual when taking Metformin but it usually only lasts a short time. Generally, it's best tolerated if taken AFTER food so, if you're not managing to eat just now, I would stop taking the Metformin, wait for your appetite to pick up again and then try with taking it after food.

If you have been taking if after food and this is how you're (not) tolerating it, I would go back to your DSN and tell her. There is a slow-release form of this medication which is usually tolerated better so it might be that you could try this one.

So, basically, I would say no, don't increase your Metformin unless you are feeling back to your normal as there is every chance you will just feel worse. Some people just can't tolerate Metformin in any shape or form but hope this doesn't apply to you as Metformin is a good medication, on the whole.
