Hi everyone, can someone please make sense of all of this!!
After weeks of high readings ranging from 11.9 to 22.2 before brekkie & in the 30's!!! 2 hrs after my evening meal. I have just done a before meal and got 3.6!! Started Metformin 23/09/12 1 a day built up to 2. Got terrified on 8th Oct after having a 3 readings over 30 in as many days, rushed to GP who gave me Gliclazide and advised that because I can handle metformin to increase to 3 a day. Today porridge and coffee for breakfast - salad, ham, mayo, M&S superfood nuts and grains, sml fruit pot cup green tea for lunch, and( increadibly naughty )I had a thorntons choc late afternoon in work! Has my body just realised I am trying to help it?? I have lost 1.6 stone since June and lowered my cholesterol frm 17 to 4.5. My triglycerides are above average and my endocrinologist says my HbA1C is "elevated" (will ask specifics nxt appt in Nov) I was also hospitalised with Pancreaitis in July. I am struggling to get this right. Today was the day I was starting low carbs aiming for 130g, shall I carry on I dont know what to do, my head is messed up. Seeing Diabetes Nurse on Tuesday at my surgery for 1st time she will have a million questions thrown at her!! In the mean time I would love a bit of advice. :?

Hi Jellystar

Sorry to hear of all your problems. I'm not sure how your history of pancreatitis will affect your diabetes. This is something that you can ask the nurse specialist when you see her. You can also ask her for the actual details of your bloods/lipids as she should have those on your record.

Hope all goes well

Not sure how the pancreatitis is affecting things, but from your description it sounds like the gliclazide kicked in fairly effectively, so your pancreas can still generate insulin, which can't be a bad thing.

Hi Jellystar and welcome.

Again not sure how how the pancreatitis will effect things. Were you advised to do the 130g / day by your doctor? While that's excellent advice that most of us would approve of just be aware that reducing your carbs means you wont need to produce so much insulin but the gliclazide will make your pancreas produce more insulin regardless of how many carbs you eat so you could end up going to low. Metformin doesn't make your pancreas produce more insulin but works in a different way so it doesn't usually cause too low problems.

In my totally non professional opinion if I were in your position I would look to gradually reduce carbs i.e. high sugar things plus just as importantly rice, pasta, bread, cereals (including porridge) potatoes and other flour based products then use my meter to gauge the results by measuring two hours after eating. If you've been getting really high readings expect your readings in the morning to still be quite high for quite some time. When you have stabilised your levels on gliclazide then you can decide if you want to try and give the gliclazide up (or reduce it) by electing to cut carbs further or just keep as you are. The important thing is to get your levels safe as unfortunately those really high levels will do damage. Whatever you do try and aim for a regime that in you think you can continue with long term.

You may also find your nurse will not approve a move to a low carb regime because that's what they are taught so get ready for a possible lecture.

Good luck and keep asking questions.
