When is it too high?

Hi my partner (type 2) has had a headache all day and his levels are 18 mmol, does he need to go to hospital or not? He is currently uncontrolled and often has high readings above 10 mmol.

Hi. Although 18mmol is high I would not panic but keep a close eye on it. Drink plenty of water, keep the carbs down and test frequently. I was 25 yesterday due to a big mis-match between the carbs and Bolus insulin which rather scared me but with a the right Bolus shots it came back down. What meds is your partner on? He/she could possibly be LADA (T1) and not T2 with those high levels.

At diagnosis I was eating a high carb diet and had a blood glucose level of 17.1 - so if that is what he is used to it might not be threatening - but I acted at once to lower it - enjoyed every meal since then, but - if cutting carbs has little effect it would indicate further problems and not just a simple type two.
