Where have all those words and expressions gone ?

Always wondered 'who' Gordon Bennett was ?
When it was or is said and expressed .
 
On cold mornings a neighbour used to come round to ask my brother to help her start the car with a starting handle
And you had to pull the choke out. Often wondered why it was called a choke. Maybe because it made the car cough into action :***:

Not sure why it was called that, but if you pulled it out too far on a not-so-cold morning you ended up flooding the engine, thank goodness for automatic chokes :)
 
I think it was called choke as it stopped the air supply getting into the engine and allow more fuel through?
 
The advent of the driver only buses did away with a conductor/conductress ringing the bell and shouting "hold tight "
 
Strangely strange but oddly normal.



































Only for old hippies of course .....
 
Full grant - meaning not just that the government paid my university tuition fees but that they gave me a just about adequate amount to live on, too.
