Hi, I was waiting for my daughter outside the school recently and I'm sensitive to overweight children because she is one, with insulin issues etc, so I'm watching the kids leave the school noticing they are almost all thin, so Thursday we go to the beach and my wife is happy because there a couple of fatties on the beach making her being a little bit large *cough* and so now I'm thinking about the obesity epidemic that we are enduring, ok I accept diabetics are often large so I'm amongst a high percentage here but I'm looking around as I drive along last few days and most people are thin, the number of thinnies vastly outweigh the fatties (excuse the pun) so are we in the midst of a fatter world or just recording the weight of folks more because our society is so obsessed by weight? Just a thought I figured I'd share

Trouble is they judge you on your BMI which is so outdated and unrealistic now. What you would consider normal may well be overweight or obese according to their BMI.

I'm going to be controversial here but if I'm away from the UK for a few months, I have a shock when I see the number of very large people.
Even here, sitting in the café in the middle of town we can easily tell our UK visitors from the locals from the general physique, long before we hear their voices . Those from the US are even more noticeable.
It's the same on the ferry, it's very easy to discriminate between school parties from the UK and school parties from France

Andy, I think it depends on where you live to whether you see obese people. On a recent trip to the North West, I saw loads more obese people than down south where I live.

hmmmm interesting, if bmi isnt right then the obese problem may be no where near as bad as they say, but after hearing your overseas angle maybee we are numb to it, and that may well be so i get nose bleed if i go north of the thames im a proper softy southerner :) thanks for the replies

BMI is a very approximate guide. It doesn't suit all though. As an example, the entire England Rugby squad are obese according to BMI.

Hey Andy you've done really well mate. I'm just saying know your own body ! You can look in a mirror and see if you need to lose weight. Much better than thinking you're doing great and looking at a chart to see you're still "overweight" or "obese".
BMI still has its' uses but it is certainly not gospel mate. You can be heavy and fit/healthy or very thin and unhealthy.

thanks mate, the weird thing is everyone that knows me keeps telling me to stop now because im perfect but when i look in the mirror (in my leaopard skin thong) all i see is a big wobbly belly, which is weird because when i ever heard anything like anorexics thinking they are fat when they are skinny that seemed ridiculous to me, but now im doubting my sanity, because it is there lol, its bad enough starting a iffy thread but now its digressing into my sanity issues lol

Well, I would suggest listening to your nearest and dearest mate. Sometimes, when you look at yourself in a mirror, your brain can play tricks.
Or better still, bang a pic on here ( in the leopard skin ) and we'll take a vote !

Depends where you live. I live in an urban area with a large percentage of people with chronic ill health and I'm seeing more people who aren't just overweight but huge. It's a lot more common to see people who are very large now compared to when I was a kid. In the more "health conscious" shire counties there don't seem to be as many large folks.
