Unbeliever said:I agree whelk does not appear o have a problem with his diabetes- he seems to be doing very well. The problem is that he obviously feels disengaged from the HCPs treating him - he doesn't feel that he is part of the process. He feels that things will be imposed upon hm without consultation.
That is why others including myself have had to reminfd him that he can't be forced to do something he doesn't want to do.
So many face this problem . Its so unnecessary .
Well said Unbeliever ... I think the majority of people feel disengaged from the clinicians who are treating them ... and I think that is how the NHS wants us to feel most of the time because it means they can just 'do their job' without 'interference' from patients asking annoying questions and getting in their way. Sad isn't it that we're made to feel we play very little part in our own health treatment. I doubt any patient wants tea and sympathy from their clinicians, they just want clear explanation and reasons given as to why they're being prescribed their meds so they can make an informed decision - after all we're not lab-rats - are we?
I find I'm getting more and more sarcastic with HCPs who talk down to me and try to fob me off about the 'minimal' side effects of medications. I blind them with science and give them a list of the websites I've researched on the subject of MY HEALTH just so they know that even if they don't think I am - that I AM INVOLVED. In other words I remind them I'm not a hospital number, I'm not a name, I'm not a set of symptoms - I'm a living breathing human being. The problem is some of them don't know how to handle human beings.
Whelk - YOU ARE THE PERSON WITH DIABETES - YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS HERE - your doctor and nurse can only offer you THEIR OPINION and the treatment that their guidelines recommend. That's their job done. Your job is to accept or reject their treatment or part of their treatment. You're not in court, you don't have to explain, argue or defend your case, you just have to be firm, say 'Thank you, but I'd rather see how I get on without the ...' and remember to smile. And then come to the forum
