Which drinks are safe?

Which drinks are safe for people with diabetes. I don't have diabetes myself but I currently at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

People say drinks like no added sugar cordials are okay but am I being misled? Is Tea or Coffee okay or is the caffeine a risk factor?
 
I cannot see any reason not to drink Tea or Coffee, although the lactose in any milk added must be taken into account.

The sugar free drinks will have an artificial sweetener, which should be looked at and a decision made.

There are quite a few recent threads on sweeteners which can give you more information on the subject.
 
The cordial advice is way off base and to be ignored. "Added sugars" ? Time to walk back from that precipice whilst you have that chance and yes, I know you realise that. Sugars are your enemy. Big time. Tea and coffee is not my area but use the search button (top right) and you'll see plenty of entries on that topic.
 
Am I right in eliminating any all carbs?

Vimto Mixed Fruit Squash No Added Sugar and Robinsons Lemon Squash got Zero Carb in it. Does that mean Zero Sugar?

My personal reply / opinion would be "no" .... low carb (LCHF (low carb high fat) so look that up as well in "search") does not mean "no carb". Cut them back for sure but that is a severe change as your body needs to adjust to a new and radically changed diet so gradual would be best. Gradual to some extent, but get rid of pastas, noodles, cakes, biscuits, breads, potatoes etc and pick quality substitutes ... lots of fish, above ground veg, bacon, eggs etc

I'm from Australia, so can't comment about those drinks but sweeteners (artificial or otherwise) are something I avoid at all costs. Enough of my ramblings as others may wish to chime in :)
 
Zero carb is zero sugar but a lot of these drinks have artificial sweeteners in them which are being debated at the moment, in fact I watched a documentary last week which included a study which showed they raised blood sugar :( all except Stevia (which I use) ( I think there is a thread on here somewhere)....


Coffee with double (heavy) cream is the tipple of choice for us low carbers LowCarbHighFat :) (LCHF).....

Tea also fine for me as only a splash of milk added , so pretty insignificant ..............

And a jug of cold water in the fridge :) sometimes with a tiny splash of low sugar squash again pretty insignificant

No Added Sugar does NOT mean sugar-free. There will be sugar of some sort in the product, just that the manufacturers haven't put in more, but they may have also added artificial sweeteners. I've never heard that caffeine is bad for diabetics, so I drink tea and coffee. But it's a problem finding good soft drinks. There's a new can now in Asda called Aspire, a soft drink in various flavours all sugar free.
 
Just ducking in to mention the Lactofree range. They have whole, skimmed and semi-skimmed milk which has the lactose, and therefore the sugars, removed from the milk. It tastes no different from normal milk, so is perfect in tea.
 
Also check the ingredient carefully, you can get four types of sugars all with different names, try almond milk, i use a 50/50 split with semi skimed for breakfast, don't even know its there!
