sorry, another question. Does anyone know how it is decided which medication is prescribed at first diagnosis. I was given insulin but I have noticed that others have metformin or other meds (that I can’t spell lol!) . Thanks x

That will probably depend on what your HbA1c was when diagnosed. If it were very high then I'm guessing insulin would be prescribed as an aid in getting your bloods down fast first. Do you have your numbers?

Bit of trial and error I think based on the numbers being recorded
When I was first diagnosed my BG was v high (28/9) so straight onto insulin pump
Then as numbers improved,I was moved onto Gliclazide, then as hba1c numbers hit lower levels still they tried me on metformin for a short trial but I got v bad muscle pain so they first tried no meds for another short trial which didnt work and I was moved back on to Gliclazide

Going straight onto insulin when T2 is very unusual and if you have excess weight I might question the choice to start with insulin (you may be slim of course). Normally Metformin is started. It doesn't do much but is very safe and reduces BS just a bit. Further meds depends a lot on what your BMI is or the result of any GAD or C-peptide tests. If I were you I would have a low-carb diet which you may already be doing and seeing whether the insulin dose can be reduced

Ok, thanks for advice. I do have weight still to lose, i’ve lost 3 stone and have another 3 to go. When I was diagnosed the DN called the Dr in to ‘oversee’ the appointment, not sure why? The DN mentioned Metformin but the Dr said insulin.

Thanks. I’ve got a lot to discuss at DN appointment, at least I know there may be other meds as an option
