Who else has issues with wheat?

I've realized lately that my body doesn't do well on wheat at all. Whenever I eat bread, I become very bloated, my digestion slows down and I feel tired and sluggish. I don't get diarrhea or any other gluten intolerance symptom however.

I can have 5-6 wheat crackers daily without problems, but wheat bread gives me trouble. Even potatoes seem better than wheat for me. I know I'm not supposed to be having them, but I do have mashed potatoes when my stomach is upset. It raises my blood sugar a little bit, but never enough to cause concern.

Just wondering, do most type 2 diabetics have an issue with wheat? Do you eat bread?

(As background, I was diagnosed 3 years ago, I'm only 27. I'm on metformin 850mg/daily. A1c is below 6.)

I don't eat wheat. Haven't for years. You're not the only person who has problems with it by any means. There's a book called "Wheat Belly" which explains it. It has a section on diabetes too. - can't tell you who wrote it, or quote from it I'm afraid, as my brother has just borrowed it!

Grains are BAAAD! :)

I know that book. I haven't read it but looked at the website of the author. It was impressive, and I do think that I have a sensitivity to wheat. But I also felt that some of the conclusions and generalizations the author made about wheat was a bit over the top.

If I can just control myself and kick wheat from my life altogether.

I feel so guilty sometimes, because I think I eat stuff I shouldn't be eating all the time just because my blood sugar is under control.

William Davis is the author of wheat belly. Which part did you think was over the top?
The wheat we eat now looks nothing like it used to, and as he states wheat has been modified a lot over the years, our ancestors wouldn't recognise it as wheat.

I can't eat wheat, it gives me diarrhoea. I've tested negative twice for coeliacs. As long as you don't replace it with gluten free varieties, it is a good way of cutting carbs.

I eat bread but never white or wholemeal only wholegrain or Burgen, I also eat potato but never eat it mashed as it is too processed for me to deal with but if you can eat it without it affecting your bg levels then go for it, I tend to stick to small amounts of either new potatoes, chips or roast potatoes.

I think lots of people have trouble with wheat.[the mdical profession tries to deny it]. The incidence of Coeliac disease is very much on the increase.
None of us can eat raw unprocessed wheat safely. That's why I don't eat more than tiny amounts of foods with wheat in. I prefer to eat stuff we can eat raw, whether or not I choose to cook it.

Hi All .

Good topic and thread

Yep I too cant deal with wheat or gluten :(
Bloat and blow up big time/style , also suffer spasmodic cramps which are agony
Sweat and feel nauseaus with extreme discomfort for days!

Either way end up unable to digest or am never off the loo for days ...
It will/can take up to 4 days for things to begin to settle down after an attack too .

I can tolerate a few sunflower flax seeds however  I know its a strange thing!

I just eat more veggies to compensate and they are far better for my BG levels too. :D
To even risk/attempt eating bread soooo isn't worth it for 'me' .
I suffer with too much pain and discomfort to do so .

I also have a vitamin D deficiency - hypothyroidism too [underactive thyroid]
Have often wondered 'if' there is any link with this ?
As they can affect the metabolic and digestive systems .

Ive had to stop white bread and white flour pizza base through bloating but am not affected by any other wheat problem.
Anyone noticed that new potatoes taste very bland?
When such things were seasonal and local _ish they tasted brilliant. Now you can get them all year round they are tasteless and boring. Jersey new potatoes ... grown in bong bonga!

I make the mashed potatoes myself, it's not the powder variety. We can't even get that here in Turkey, so I guess that's good.

I think French fries in moderation (6-7 piece), made at home with olive oil are okay too. I try to eat it with plain yogurt sauce (plain yogurt, salt and garlic..yum)

When my blood sugar goes up because of potatoes, I can feel it and I try to compensate by eating plain yogurt, cucumbers and the like which reduce my sugar.

Plain yogurt is a savior. When eaten with potentially risky foods, it helps slow down the absorption of glucose. My mom makes three large jars of homemade yogurt every week, so I always have access to it.

Like I said, I haven't read the book. But on his website, he makes connections between all sorts of health disorders and wheat intolerance. I don't think wheat can cause that many problems. It will cause digestive and metabolic problems...but I don't think it can be responsible for everything.

Wow, it sounds like you really have a wheat intolerance. I never get diarrhea or cramps from wheat, just bloating, slow digestion and fatigue.

I had hypothyroidism too. My thyroid seems to be better now, I've been taken off synthetic hormones as they were coming up too high in blood tests.

Hypothyroidism causes fatigue and weight gain, but it doesn't seem like there would be a connection with wheat intolerance.

I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease last year and I can't eat wheat, Gluten, Rye, Barley and Oats. All gluten free and I get foods on prescription I have never felt so ill, it was horrible. I too had a bloated tummy at times, but losing weight each week, vomiting, nausea, upper abdominal pain, a bad tummy and feeling, at times, so very, very sick. Unbelievable.

best wishes RRB

Cripes RRB you too as well

I am - just as you describe above - I sympathsise with you completely .
Took me 3 weeks to get over one attack .
Thing is - I tested only once positive for coeliac then the next 2 tests they did were negative .
So they then said I wasn't coeliac .

Wheat, gluten, oats are like cement in my system its terrible
Seeds and pips get stuck in my diverticulitis pockets and can cause flare ups .

I do find the drug mebeverine/colofac taken with cocodamol pain relief helps with my flare ups .
Though if get infections I do need a full course of antibiotics .

I am now mostly fine, but it must be adhered to and I have to have my own toaster, I am supposed to have my own kitchen utensils, but I haven't. The test comes back in 2 parts, first part was negative? second part positive, the reading was in red and it came back greater than a hundred, which is off the scale. This was in June last year and I had to have two endoscopy's because the first one I had, they didn't do the biopsy, this was in August, I had to have a second one in October :x and then I was told the news in November, when I went to see my GP. It's for life and coeliac's must take all precautions with cross contamination.........never mind it could be worse

Anna, if it continues try and get another test done, but you must continue to eat wheat and gluten ,or the result could come back a false negative. Take care

RRB

Well I be  - I did stop eating it after the 1st test .
It was crippling me and creasing me tooo much to keep doing it .

It is unfair to have to eat this - just to make it show up :x :x :x

The endoscopys I had done showed up severe diverticulitis clearly even I could see it all on the screen .

We cant eat what we would like to with BOTH our diabetes and bowel conditions
