Me too Fujifilm but the Fire Brigade certainly wouldn't advise you to do that. We had them here recently to fit smoke alarms and dish out advice on what to do and what not to do. Their advice on hearing the smoke alarm going off for an unknown reason was very definitely get out of the building quick and phone them on 999 - certainly no investigating! It surprised me too!

See, even by analogy I'm right... Have a good weekend everyone

Diagnosed as type 1 Oct 08, I admit that I am still quite confused on a number of issues. I was hospitalised for a week as my GP did not diagnose my diabetes and I just about made it to the hospital in a semi-comatose state with a BG of 45. I left the hospital under the impression that I could eat pretty much what I liked especially carbs. But for months after I felt ill, my stomach was bloated as if I was about 6 months preggers and I was always tired. I am also on steroids for another complaint and started putting on weight. The need to understand about diabetes led me to this forum and the discussions on diet.

I started experimenting with my diet to less carbs, low fat, little protein, loads of water (so I know just about where all the good loos are in town) lots of walking and needless to say my readings have vastly improved. I am still testing and working out effects of certain foods on my BG level as I do sneak in the odd 'bad' carb.

I agree with the general consensus that we are all different and that DIY management has a major role to play along with the advice from the experts - who will sometimes get it wrong. I kinda figured out that they have to take a 'national/general' approach and that we the individuals have to use their advice, our research, experiences etc to get the right mix - like a nice 'rum and coke'. My last HbA1c 6.3 - next one due Oct - a bit scared as I have been experimenting with foods. Of black Afro-Carib descent I am now experimenting with Caribbean foods - yam, sweet potato, ackee mango etc to get the right balance.

Will be attending my first Diabetes Conference in Oct and am curious to hear what others have to say.

Thank God for this forum!

Blessings

Hi mangosue,

I'm not certain that we are all that different, from what I read on these diabetes forums I am being amazed to find that loads - possibly most - non-insulin-dependent Type 2s sound to be just the same as me.

Moreover, with respect, it's not quite the same for the Type 2s as you Type 1s. Type 2s are generally told "do not test" and at the same time to "eat plenty of starchy carbohydrate". How do they work out what that the advice given does to their blood glucose levels?

All Type 1s test so they can see clearly what happens except that it becomes more complicated due to the added factor of what insulin injections do.

Best wishes - John

Don't you wish that the doctors who give the worst advice got whatever they were giving advice about soon afterwards? Then we probably wouldn't need to do much more than watch how fast the average advice of the survivors changed.
