Who needs the gym!

Hi,
Understanding the differences regarding individual achievement, however it's done should be more important than comparisons with others.
The world don't move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you, may not be right for some..

Well done on the new you. @Type-2-Havent-A-Clue , may it continue! :)

Rather than spending time individually responding to comments from members I’ll address my “Who needs the gym” topic with a one-off response to the points I remember.

Firstly my thread title is in reference to the stereotype that is universally common amongst people that gyms are used for people to lose weight that’s it. If I’d of titled it “who needs Gardening” someone would of said why the garden reference? We need Gardens to grow fruit/veg/plants! Whatever I’d of put would of courted someone from the “I’m offended on behalf of” brigade.
So I stuck to using a commonly thought of notion.

I will say it’s a bit like asking why do we need doctors... it’s a bit obvious isn’t it?!

Secondly, Anyone who thinks I’m posting about my weight loss to wind people up or to be smug or arrogant.. WRONG! I post it to show people that anything is possible if you have the belief and confidence in yourself and your determination to succeed!

Finally, I do not have a target weight because I find setting goals like this can sometimes lead to someone slipping up in their aims or setting to high an achievement and failing so my aim is to do the best I can by putting the trust in my body and letting it take care of everything else! I’ll just supply the ammunition!

To my supporters thank you for your support and backing!

Quick update for you all!

Last week I weighed in at 20st 8lb

This week... 19st 9lb!

I had to double check but it’s all legitimate!
Hard to believe the numbers when they're staring you in the face eh? ;) And it'll just keep getting better! Congrats on the loss!

Good for you and long may it continue.

Since I became a full grown adult I have progressively got bigger and bigger. I ate more when I was more active as a young adult, way more than I do now. And yet I am bigger and fatter now. The difference by a country mile is the level of activity. Not necessarily gym activity.

I would argue that the difference is insulin resistance.

The biggest change occurred once I had learned to drive and bought a car, stopped walking everywhere. This was approximately the time I stopped playing squash regularly too.

That was in my mid twenties.

I actually believe the two go hand in hand. Both are highly influential factors.

You may have heard mention of Tim Noakes? Marathon runner and sports scientist. Also T2. Granted, he would carb load for excercise but couldn't outrun his diet. He now advocates for the Banting Diet and freely admits that "I got it wrong".

I think a lot depends on what we call “a bad diet”. There are bad diets, very bad diets and various shades either way.

My own personal history serves to tell me that as my life has become more and more sedentary my weight has gone up and that includes the recent past where I don’t even leave the house to go to work. Last year at 102 kg I was the heaviest I had been all my life at a time when I also have been the most sedentary since being a baby.

Is that (entirely) down to insulin resistance?

From a personal perspective whenever I have tried to lose wait and succeeded I have found that the biggest factor in losing that weight has been exercise (activity).

Well done @Type-2-Havent-A-Clue That is a truly amazing loss in such a short time.

As far as the exercise question is concerned, plenty of us manage to lose a considerable amount of weight and normalise our blood sugars without it. I do walk the dog, do the housework, do the gardening and other daily chores, but I always have done. I added nothing extra. Being sedentary does not, in itself, cause insulin resistance. High levels of insulin cause insulin resistance, and these high levels can be brought under control by diet alone, or diet in conjunction with meds. That is my belief.

That depends on the extent of the insulin resistance.

My exercise levels have been constant for the last few years.
Food intake hasn’t decreased, but has altered, with the result that my insulin resistance has improved a bit.
So has my weight.

Of course, one of the main benefits of exercise is the reduction of insulin resistance.

Of all the things in my life I have control over my ability exercise is not one of them.

So any change in the status of my diabetes, IR and weight has to be down to other factors the most important for me being diet.
