Wholegrain and brown rice

I must admit the more I read the more confused I get. Should I eat wholegrain or brown rice?

I must confess that I get very confused. On the one hand I see people saying eat carbs and on the other they say don't. I used to like arborio and Jasmain rice - but I guess that I'm not supposed to eat them anymore.

You can eat anything you want. You just need to TEST, and see how foods effect your BG.

Same with portions - test after a certain size portion of rice, next time, try a different portion size, and test again.

You'll soon know what foods and portion sizes effect your BG.

Good advice from Patch, however the best rice to eat for any diabetic who wants to eat rice is basmatti rice as it has a molecular structure that the human body finds very, very difficult to break down, hence, it is digested very slowly and has a much slower carb release/absorption rate than other forms of rice which lessens the rise in bg levels.

Or so I was told by my dietitian :D

I'm also a fan of Basmati Rice especially the sort (Tilda) that comes in the microwaveable steam packets. Takes 2 minutes and I can manage a half pack without any problems with Bg levels. There are many delicious flavours including my favourite Pilau Rice. As Patch says.....it's only by testing you will find out what you can and cannot tolerate.

Interesting stuff. Gonna have to try some of that (and some serious testing). Maybe try eating it with a creamy korma to slow down the impact of the carbs even further...

God, I love rice.

I found a Tilda wholegrain Basmati which is only something like 14g carb per 60g portion (from memory so not exact sorry! but I do know it is way lower than normal rice).
It's a bit more expensive but worth it as it has little impact on my BG and is soooo nice to have rice back on the menu after avoiding it for over a year because of the high carbs :)

This evenings meal was chili con carne ( with red kidney beans and mushrooms ) and wholegrain basmati rice. Had about half of what the rest of the family had ( about 2 tablespoons of the rice and 4 of the chili ) and after 2 hours my bg was 7.9. So I guess I'm going to be a lowish carber from now on. makes life easier I must say!
