Wholemeal pasta and brown rice

Type 2 diabetics are a very diverse group and so what is OK for one may not be for another. Most of us see very little difference (in blood glucose response) between refined carbs and the 'whole' versions.

The only way you can tell which foods are OK or not for you is to eat them and test blood glucose just before eating and then 2hrs after first bite.

It also depends what your overall aims are and how far you have to get blood sugar down. A prediabetic friend got out of range eating wholemeal carbs. I needed to get my numbers down from 101 so I didn't eat any. Successfully did so but when I started eating them again it didn't have a happy ending!!

I don’t have pasta very often but find that if I cook, cool and then reheat it it doesn’t affect my BS too much.

That depends on you largely - what you want to achieve, your timescale, the quantity you intend to eat, the rest of your diet. It also depends on the impact eating those things has on your BG (if BG is what you are concerned about).

Personally I don't eat pasta or rice of any kind - wholemeal or brown makes no difference to me, all sorts of pasta and rice have always had a large impact on my BG that I prefer to avoid.
 
Quantity is as important as what you eat. So for instance, I find I can eat some brown rice, but only 1/4 of a cup (cooked). It also very much depends on what you eat it with. So for instance if I eat it with protein, it slows down digestion and my body is better able to cope with it. Problem is that it isn't 100% predicable. I used a CGM to test these scenarios and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - so I just avoid rice and all starchy carbs these days as I find it mentally unhealthy to be constantly checking and monitoring my BG. I would like to live a regular life without obsessing about my blood glucose. The easiest way to do that for me is just avoid all high glycaemic foods. YMMV.

I’ve been diabetic for over 20 years. I followed advice to eat low fat high carbs and watch my calorie intake. I got worse and the medications got diverse and ever increasing as did the waist line. Things settled on Victoza but that’s no longer available and I’m now on a low dose of basal insulin.
I’ve cut carbs to 50/60 gms and for the first time in 20 years I’m losing weight slowly, but yep losing it. I got a free trial of Libre 2 and I’m now self funding it for a few months. It opened my eyes to the effects of carbs on my glucose levels.
I loved porridge and lentil soups…not any more. Half slice of whole meal granary is a treat now.
I find I can take a little pasta or rice as part of an evening meal without raising my glucose too high but am learning to live with my proteins and fats and green veg.

I read the other day that T2s on insulin are now able to get CGM if they are on insulin. However, there are certain criteria and I don't think all areas of the UK offer them yet. Still, might be worth finding out.

Unfortunately I don’t qualify. I’m only on one injection of basal daily. But as expensive as it’s working out it’s been invaluable to me building information on what I can eat and which carbs trigger me…lol most of them… so maybe I don’t need one!
But I’d no idea the effects of porridge, bread, potatoes, lentils etc were having till I used one. Finger pricking helped but the CGM was more graphic/meaningful and I think we should all have them. The NHS would save a fortune on diabetic complications.

All carbohydrates, including wholemeal pasta and brown rice, end up as glucose in your bloodstream, which makes your type 2 diabetes worse. My body does not handle pasta or rice well, so I take the easy route and avoid pasta and rice completely. There are some tasty substitutes available.

Do you have a glucose meter and test strips or do you rely on HbA1c test results?
