Why a sudden spike...when eating nothing??

So we were very pleased yesterday when my other haf (T2) got a midday reading of 6.7 , a premeal reading of 6.4 and an after meal reading of 6.5

Today she's not had anything yet today, and we did a quick reading before lunch (fried mushrooms)
And the reading came in 8.7!! She's had literally nothing??
I made her check again incase the meter was wrong (code3) and it read 8.2 second time.

Why would she have such a huge spike when she hasn't eaten anything ?

She was so optimistic yesterday for the first time since being diagnosed, and now she's so depressed, she's asking 'what's the point?'
 
This may be the dawn phenomenon, its basically where your liver decides to release some glucose into your system to get you ready for the day especially if you haven't eaten anything, so some find it useful to have something first thing to stop the liver being its oh-so-not-helpful self.

Edit: corrected the sentence, I was missing a few words, looks like a proper sentence now

She's doing great, really. I have to agree, this is dawn phenomenon. Nothing too bad, and it should get better with time. Keep up the good work!
 
Ok that clears things up a bit , we don't usually eat breakfast , but I shall now make sure my oh has something when she gets up , even if its just a boiled egg!
 
It's been very hard for her, as she is a very fussy eater and pretty much lived on sandwiches, noodles, pasta and mash!
So as you can imagine it's very hard.

We're looking at finding the lowest carb bread we can (so far it's children's milk roll) , until I can get some almond flour and have at go at making he keeto bread.

It will eventual stop being so dramatic once the liver has reduced its glucose stores.. personally I'd carry on with kipping breakfast.
In the meantime cream cheese and eggs give oopsie bread ...recipe is quite a way down the page
