Why are my FBG levels fluctuating?

I don't understand why when I went to bed last night (after midnight) my BG reading was a good 6 and when I tested my FBG this morning it was 8.9

I'm on my Fast Day today (am doing the 8 week Blood Sugar Diet) recommended by Dr Michael Moseley and am trying to lose weight by low carbing, counting calories etc

I had got my FBG levels down to the 7's a few weeks ago (they used to be in the 8's) but not sure if this is a 'blip' or not. I do usually always test my FBG levels so will have to continue doing so and seeing what the pattern throws up.

The liver has a lot to answer for specifically with relation to both:

-Raised BGL when reducing carbohydrate intake (glycogen release from liver as alternative energy source)
-Morning BGL rising (Dawn Phenomenon).

I'd imagine that your possibly experiencing the first of the two bullet points. I'm not entirely sure what your 8 week diet includes but there will be someone here who has done it and can advise. @KevinPotts more than likely!

OK, have just hit another 'mystery' can someone explain?

After my FBG reading of 8.9 as I stated above, I have not had any breakfast as I am on a Fast Day today and just thought I would test again expecting it to be quite low - it reads 8.3 !! - I don't understand this, seems like my level this morning has stuck for some reason. Can it just stick? never had this happen before :-(

Nothing much I can add other than as you fast, your liver takes a while (can be a few days for me) to clear the glycogen it stores for glucose (about 300g, equivalent of about 2000 Cals). Once it's cleared, your system looks to the fat for fuel and the liver dump in my experience. During a fast I do find the morning spikes increase in view of the foregoing, but that's not a reason to stop the fast:)

It does sound complex but I'm going to continue with 5:2 and low carb intake and watching calories. it does seem to be working and I'm losing weight more than I ever have done over the years so I will stick at it but just weird this morning when my FBG was high (ish) and sort of 'stuck' mid morning. I had a ploughmans lunch today and will be testing in about half an hour after 2HPM so will see what the levels are then. I may make an appointment to see my GP tomorrow and go over this with him and see what he thinks.

All very interesting.
