Why breakfast?

"Why breakfast" is written on a local wall and it always makes me smile - not one of my favorite meals either.

My usual breakfast is too carb based I think: cereal and toast or an egg (organic) on toast. I can never think of any other good alternatives that are fast, simple and relatively healthy.

I recently bought a new cereal "lizis granola" which says it is 5.5. GL I have yet to eat it and test my blood later but on first try I like it. For chocolate lovers I think there is low GL cocoa version too.

Does anyone have any interesting breakfast ideas :D Ginger

I'm a porridge fan too. Can't seem to have it without something sweet in it so I cut up a small handfull of raisins along with chopped nuts and seeds.

Will try with cinnamon - sounds nice.

I always have toast and that does me till dinner time. If I had the choice of wheather to have breakfast or not then I would choose not to eat it

If I eat breakfast it'll normally be either Weetabix or Porridge.
If I'm preaching to the converted I apologise, but when talking with a friend the other day he didn't realise that you can make porridge in the microwave, so I'll pass on my 'easy-porridge' recipe. :D

Put oats in a bowl - add milk - microwave for 2mins on 750watt setting. Leave to stand for 30secs then add cold milk.
I like my porridge stodgy so by experimenting with how much milk to add you'll soon be able to get the texture that you prefer. I don't take sugar with anything so it's just cold milk for me but you may have something that you like to go with yours.

It's a quick and easy way to make porridge that works for me. :)

Hi Dave,

Agree with you about the porridge, but have you tried Oatabix instead of Weetabix. Comes from the same manufacturer but, being made from oats, have slightly lower carb contend and are lower GI than the wheat-based product. Tastes quite good as well - if you like porridge then you will probably like Oatabix.

Hi Dennis

Yes, I tried the Oatabix but didn't really like it. Call me old fashioned, but Weetabix has been a steady, tried & tested formula for years. :)

i admit that i don't tend to eat breakfast much anymore, i know that it's better if I do but I don't like eating so early. If I do then I will normally have a small yogurt or 1 slice of toast.

I also find breakfast a pain to bolus for because I can't eat the 20g carb required to give 1 unit

On the subject of Oatibix, I tried Oatibix bitesize and liked them. Then tried the other Oatibix (larger and like Weetabix to look at) and thought they were vile! Might be worth trying the other one if you weren't keen. The bitesize also contain a prebiotic but the amount is so small I can't believe it makes much of a difference....

I have to say I'm amazed to see that everyone is eating breakfasts mostly comprised of carbohydrates. Sure, cereals and stuff are quick and easy to throw together, but what about your blood sugar?
It must be a wee bit of a toboggan ride with all those fast acting carbs battling big old doses of insulin.
It makes no sense to me, I'm a bacon and eggs guy.

All the best,

fergusc

Well I have tried Oatibix for the last two mornings, believing the oats were going to be good for my cholesterol but they shot my BS up quite significantly. But what else is there??? I am sure I could not stomach bacon and egg first thing.

Hi Poppy,
What do you like to eat? There are lots of options that don't have to rely on the sugar and starch of processed cereals and bread. Do you like eggs at all?

Poppy,

If you can't face bacon and eggs, then have a continental-style protein breakfast of a cold hard boiled egg with a couple of slices of ham. If you add to that one small slice of wholemeal bread you still have around half the carbs of an oat-based breakfast.

Gotta have breakfast. Bad for your body and mental functions to run on fumes.

Small serving of oatmeal w/cinamin as a side to eggs using a low GI sweetner such as Stevia or Organic Blue Agave.

Scrambled eggs spiced up with a little melted cheese and picante sauce, sprouted grain toast, yum. Organic of course.

French Toast! Heavey egg batter with cinnamin using a sprouted grain organic bread and lightly syruped w/Organic Blue Agave. The toast can be cooked up ahead and heated when ready to eat.

I'm not a cereal eater but my husband will alternate a cold organic granola cereal w/organic milk sometimes.

We may add some turkey bacon to any of these.

We strive for 30% Protein, 30% Fat & 40% Carbs at each meal.

Happy Trails,
