Why did my blood sugar go up?

Totally confused as my sugar went up from 5.7 to 7.0 without me eating anything? All I had was a cup of Nescafe coffee with full fat milk and sweetners. I only found out as I tested my before number before having my dinner... I wasn't going to bother but glad I did. Anyone got any ideas why it went up so much with no obvious reason?

It’s anyone’s guess really, how far apart were the tests? Sometimes for me I can liver dump if my BG go below 4 my liver compensates and my BG can go up

full fat milk has carbs so depending on how much you had it could have contributed, some people find that sweeteners trigger the same response as sugar, your body thinks it’s getting something sweet so it deals with it the same, BG isn’t linear and there’s more than food that can affect it, the weather, exercise, stress, lack of sleep

How long after eating did you have the coffee? You could still have been on the rise from previous food if it was less than 2 or 3 hrs

I’ve seen some forum members report that even coffee has affected their BG, I’ve never experienced that though

It’s only a rise if just over 1 - allowing for meter accuracy it could have been less or more.

The best way to know if it’s what you drank that affected you is keep a food diary & record everything and test it a couple of times or more to see if there’s a trend

Thank you for your help. It freaked me out completely as the same coffee with milk and sweetners has never had any effect before as my recent testing shows but I will be more aware of it and check more. The tests were at least 4 hours apart and the only thing I can think of is I had the coffee on its own whereas before I always had it with a meal. Noted and will check if that might be a possible cause

Thank you for your help. Panic over...must have been a blip as after dinner reading @ 1 hour is 5.4 .....phew....so relieved

Stop panicking and stressing, :) it won’t help you, just relax and do the first bite & 2 hr tests and keep the diary

Um.... that's a small rise and those values are not really far enough apart to exclude meter inaccuracy. Meters are allowed to be up to 15% inaccurate. So a true value of 6.0 could show as anything from 5.1 to 6.9.

Secondly I can go from low fives to high nines on the basis of one small latte. It's just the lactose in the milk. Rise occurs in the first hour and is gone by the end of the second. So if it did actually rise, that milk is a possible reason.

Thirdly, your BG can rise because your liver decides to make some glucose itself and add it to your blood because it thinks you need it. This can be in response to any number of things - illness, stress, adrenaline, exercise, ambient temperature etc.

I know it's easier to say than do, but don't worry about this. It's to be expected.

Thank you so much for the information and reassurance. I know now that I am panicing way too much and also testing too much. No more worrying about testing that isn't needed.

It won't surprise you to learn that stress itself is one of those things that causes you to start creating glucose in your liver.
It's totally natural to want to understand everything now!! - I certainly did, and my stress levels were through the roof early on.
Learning not to stress just becomes one of the adjustments you make, day by day; you'll get there.
