Why does BS go hay wire?

Hello All,

I am completely confused! - I have been taking regular readings and making notes on my diet to try and get an understanding of what makes my BSs fluctuate. I was bad yesterday at a family event, had a few to drink, and even some cake (my Doc said it was OK once in a while). My Bs wasn't too bad at the end of yesterday (9 ish), and by this morning (fasting) was down to about 7.5, (my recent 7 day average for the same time) then I had porridge made with water for breakfast with a tad of sugar free soja milk, and since nothing, but have just done a test to find I am up to 10.8 (way above my average for the same time) - why has it gone UP so much in relation to the morning reading?

Any help or comments much appreciated.

Maybe you have an especially carb sensitive system like me?

When I started testing (only a month or so ago), I too found that my averages were in the late sixes/early seven areas. But even a small amount of carbs would shoot me up to elevens, fifteens, nines etc.

I suggest you get serious for a week and almost completely lay off the carbs and take readings after your meals at 1,2 & 4 hours. Then slowly introduce them into your diet in measured amounts to see how they effect you. Add the carbs to meals you have already tested to get a baseline to compare with.

Reintroduce the carbs at 30 g gram amounts, (so you'll need an electric scale.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pickled Pepper,

I will indeed do that. My Doc said 3 weeks ago that I need to go back and see him, after receiving results if new blood test (in a weeks time) and he will decide if I need to go into hospital to have my triglycerides and Bss balanced for a few days. That is at roughly the same time I am going on hols. so I NEED to make some significant progress before then! - You may well be right about the card sensitive bit, I was doing best when my staple diet was lean meat and salad. Can you advise as to how you measure carbs? - is it simply by putting a potato on the scales, so to speak?

Many thanks again

PS. No disapproval here! 8)

Sorry, that should have read "if blood tests (in a weeks time) are unfavourable again, and then he will decide if......

I haven't had a spud since diagnosis, the only explicit carbs I have in my diet at the mo are:

Burgen Soya Linseed Bread
Organic Brown Rice
Pearl Barley

Of these I can only have 1 slice of the bread at a time.

I measure the cooked (boiled and drained) rice and barley on something similar to this, that I bought from Argos:

I found I can tolerate 40g of rice or barley in a meal.

Thanks again,

I have one of those so I can do that. Interesting to hear you can eat pearl barley, I is that to go in a "Corned Beef" recipe which is of the American variety rather than the tinned genre. The Soja bread I have never heard of although I do drink soja milk, but I am actually trying my hand at baking some all wholemeal bread using soja milk rather than cos's, with some olives rolled in, and I understand that should be OK. Many thanks for your useful suggestions and hints.

Regards
