Is it normal for you not to eat after dinner? It’s possible your liver thought you were about to starve after not eating for so long and levels dropping from where it’s used to them being and dumped extra glucose to “help“ you. It’s a normal process for all humans but in type 2 the liver gets it wrong and overdoes it sometimes. As you train your body to better newer habits (lower levels and less frequent but more filling and nutritious meals) that silly liver will eventually behave better.

Stick to keeping the rest of the day with minimal rises 2hrs after meals and ignore the fasting one for now would be the main advice you’ll get in here for type 2 diet managed. That will improve your hba1c and health far more than worrying a single reading you can only change gradually over time.

And yes for some people coffee might cause a small rise. Also the sweetener might be calorie free but is is carb free? Many aren’t and 4 is a lot. Look particularly for maltodextrin or dextrose in the ingredients (common but cause bgl spikes like sugar does). If they are there find another one or even batter start ditching them entirely- easier said than done. 5 yrs in and I can only do it sometimes myself.

edit: this is often termed dawn phenomenon even though it can happen at any time of day, it’s just more common then.

I Think rather than the liver getting it wrong, it just dumps some sugar, relying on the Insulin to regulate things, which we all know is our problem.
But if we get things under control, our Insulin resistance improves a bit, so the regulation works a bit better. It's just a case of keep on doing the right things, eventually the system works better, and that figure will come down. Though EVERYONE has sugar dumps, it's just diabetes compromises the regulation.

How well did you sleep?
Are you coming down with an illness? (It may be a few days before I find out that is the cause for higher numbers.)
Do you have a stressful day ahead?
Were you less active than usual yesterday?
Is it warmer or colder than usual?

There are many things that can affect our BG than just what we eat or drink.

That doesn’t explain why a type 2 with typically loads of insulin can keep on dumping and increasing for hours. We might be slow to deal with glucose but we do get there and do have insulin. Obviously being insulin resistant makes that process less efficient but that’s true all the time. The dumping should only occur when it’s needed (eg low bgl due to not eating for some time or exercise induced). It is not needed at higher than optimal levels (but the liver is conditioned to think higher is normal) nor after breakfast hence why I say it’s an issue with too much dumping more than inability to process what is dumped.
