Why isnt it going down!

I am *really* confused by my glucose readings (One Touch Ultra 2). I am recently diagnosed and have found this forum to be a God send. Had one Metformin 500G as I have just started on them.

I had a modest DINNER at 18:30. My readings were as follows:
pre meal 10.7 AT 18:30
19:51 12.4
21:32 13.8
22:28 12.3
23:28 12.6
00:30 13.1

Everything I have read says that the ratings should peak after 2 hrs but mine are stil up after 6 hours.

Would appreciate any ideas. Has anyone else come across this?
 
as already said, what did u eat? that should hold the answer :)
 
OK - Sorry should have given that. I had two chapati (Indian bread made with a mix of wheat, chickpea flour and spinach - to reduce GI), A bowl of plain low fat yogurt and okra.

At 3AM the blood sugar did go down to 8.3. However fasting at 10.5am was 10.0. So sounds as if the liver is throwing glucose?

I am generally finding that it is taking long time for my sugar levels tocome down after food and when they do go down they hardly ever go below two digits.

Welcome to the forums.

Had one Metformin 500G as I have just started on them.

There is one answer, it will take awhile for the tablets to kick in, mine did and my levels were out of this world, 25+ but now I am keeping them down in the single margins.

Have a look around these forums you will find the answer to almost any question and if you can't just ask and one of the many good people on here will answer it for you. believe me I have found tremendous help here since being diagnosed T2 last November, and am still getting the help I need both mentally and emotionally :D

Therein may lie part of your answer - a lower GI food such as this will take longer to raise your blood sugar. For how long will depend on your own physiology and other factors, so it'll be a bit of trial and error at first.

Sounds very much like Dawn Phenomenon to me, which happens to everyone - diabetic or not. Your body's insulin resistance increases in response to various hormones released in the early hours. As a result if you're not producing enough insulin, your blood sugar will rise to some degree.

Sounds like some trials of different food may be in order? Maybe even trying a high GI diet for a day or two, see if the numbers come down quicker(they SHOULD do). The morning numbers happen anyway, so dont worry, once the control of your BGs is there both the am and pm tests will be down. Mine used to be in the 11-12 range in the mornings, 7-8 at night, and now I have them under 6 in the morning, and under 4 at night, although i am medicated to the hilt! :roll: Perseverence is the key, unfortunately.

(That, and anything tasty is probably bad for you :lol: (joke!))
 
What you are finding is that your pancreas cannot tolerate carbs such as you ate. The metformin will help you a little but it is more about your insulin resistance and insulin deficiency and that is why your getting the highs that you are. Your poor pancreas cant produce enough insulin to cover your meal.

I would suggest testing your meals closely with your meter to determine what carbs really send you off the charts. Take one meal a week such as breakfast, test that and see how you are doing before and after breakfast. Low carb is the key if you are a diabetic. If you are new to this going low carb as much possible is a good way to then determine how hard your pancreas will have to work. Good Luck
