Just curious if anyone can help. Last night 2 and half hours after dinner, I tested and was 5.1. Then after 6 hours sleep, not eating, not drinking, I work up this morning and tested immediately and was 7.4. Why the rise when I didn't do anything but sleep?

Didn't anyone tell you about the "dawn phenomenon" where your liver releases glucose to get you up and going in the morning? This is one reading that usually take the longest to come down.. I think it was about 9 months after starting low carbing that my before bed and getting up bloods equalised and I can still get the odd morning spike. I have also started taking a tablespoon of apple cyder vinegar before bed alongside my magnesium supplement which does seem to have helped bring my FBG lower. For example last night before bed I was 5.6 after some Oppo ice cream. This morning FBG was 4.7.

Same thing happened to me this morning. Went to bed at 6.2 and woke up at 6.9. So frustrating!

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a read of the article later today.
I will also look to buy some Apple Cider Vinegar - is it best to have it at night or in the morning? or both? does it matter?
Also curious about the magnesium supplement - is that something you need, or something we can all make use of having? I'm on 1 metformin twice a day, so would it be ok to take magnesium as well?

I quite often fast so don't get that many minerals from food so I supplement..the magnesium also helps to keep me "regular".
The Apple Cyder Vinegar I get is this one

apparently you need the one with "the mother" (I have no idea what that means) but I think its to do with the scum in the bottom, well that's what it looks like to me. I just have a tablespoon at night but I did start on it with one in the morning too. For god's sake dilute it with water as it will wreck your teeth and tastes revolting if you have it neat.. I mix it with fizzy water about 1 tablespoon to a half pint (at least) glass.
If metformin is giving you an upset tum then you won't need the magnesium! I would be wary taking both together.

If you find a fix for Dawn Phenomenon can you let me know :) I've been looking for a way to get rid of it for at least the last two years.

Yes, the 'Mother' is to do with the scum at the bottom of the bottle of ACV.

I also take magnesium because shortly after starting a low carb way of eating I started getting cramp in my legs and feet at night and was recommended a magnesium supplement - worked beautifully and I haven't had a problem since - except for the time I was sorting though my meds and couldn't remember exactly why I took the magnesium supplement - so I stopped. Two nights later while hopping around my bedroom trying to get rid of the cramp in both feet and trying not to wake my husband with my crashing around I finally remembered why I took it.:confused:

I'll wake up higher if I have too much protein or a high saturated fat evening meal.

I (the wife) has grown mother in vinegar .. its not anything in the bottom of the bottle its like a jellyfish suspended mid way in the vinegar .. its grown natural from the sugar in the vinegar. Sorry I could only find a link in wiki .. Mine was not quite the same to look at as the one in the photo .. but we grew it in white vinegar

You live and learn.. thanks for that..

I make my own sauerkraut in small batches. The cupboard smells even when there isn't a batch in it. I'm the only one that eats it. Mr Hotpepper won't go near it.:hungover:

Got the wife to photograph our vinegar with the 'mother' growing in it .. its about 5 years olds now and moves .. turning over and flinching sometimes if its suddenly put in bright light .. I used to torment it by shining a torch light on it .. but the wife stopped this by telling me it is alive !!!!

Went to a talk given by Prof Robert Thomas Oncologist and Sauerkraut, Keffir and other foods were listed as the best natural probiotics for gut flora. Gut flora health is seen as essential for improvements in cancer as well as mainstream health.

He was also adamant that no cereal (including porridge) or bread to be eaten... for breakfast if person really cannot do without cereal the only one recommended was sugar free puffed rice (not rice crispies). Only ever have honey after a meal.
That insulin resistance and obesity fuelled cancer..

He also recommended pomi-t tablets for fighting cancer or eating... pmegranate, green t, broccoli and turmeric.

Fantastic to meet someone that is actually recommending foods outside of the NHS eatwell plate......
