Why this forum is GOOD

I
A GP means GENERAL practitioner, they are not experts on diabetes. This forum helped me get a handle on it, otherwise I would still be in the dark! And scared!

IMO that's the main raison d'etre for this and all other forums. Your average GP needs to know a bit about a lot of things. It's relatively easy for a lay person to learn one hell of a lot more about one or two conditions than their doctor, and in some cases pay it back, some doctors actually DO learn from their successful patients.

Meanwhile it's important for less successful patients to learn from the successful ones. Nothing works the same for everyone but given enough information you can soon work out what does and what does not apply to YOU.

I don't post very often but I do log on every day and read with the interest members' topics. Sometimes there are differences expressed but surely that is good (unless it is personal destructive criticism) - I generally view it as banter and people are going to have different opinions. I don't know which members have recently left and feel sad that they have felt it necessary to do so. I hope that they will miss using this very useful site and will soon return.

I have gained a lot of good information from members who have had to go through the bad times and have been good enough to share their knowledge of how they have managed to pull through those times and are now feeling much better. Just think what it would be like if we didn't have this type of service and we were left isolated with only the occasional visit to the DN.

Regards Val

Well doctors do mostly go into general practice.
What a great thought that they are practising on you.

This forum is good as it has helped me keep my mind open, and that the one size fits all package does not work for everyone. I have learnt a lot from just reading but also from helpful members giving their thoughts on any issues I have posted. Great knowledge base.

:)

I'm so glad I found this site too. Helped me a lot and so have you guys. Made me laugh given me pause for thought and some really good ideas. Even made me cry at times at some of your stories and that poor chocfish has beend riven out by some right evil so and so's. Carry on everybody and lets have a lot more fun!!

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just want to say that there are some of the nicest ,kindest people on this forum that it has been my fortune to meet.Thank you.

Thanks for re-starting this thread Sue as I missed it first time around.

Truly this forum is more than good - it is saving many lives and sparing many people painful disabilities and life threatening complications as well as being a friendly, fun place to visit, browse and comment in.

My biggest worry is the feeling of guilt with all the time I spend here...

I am always surprised at the number of newly diagnosed members that continually find their way here - a good indicator that so many are left without the help, information or support they need from the NHS.

As Dan started this thread I'd just like to ask him - in the history of the forum how many total members have been registered . It would be good to see which countries they come from too...

Total members 13133 at the moment .Press the 'members' icon at the top of the page and you can browse through them. Not sure if this is the total membership from both the previous forums or not.

Thanks Sue, i hadnt seen this before either, I would like to add my Thanks, and Appreciation, for all the help and comments, i have received since joining I'm really glad I found this site too. Its made me laugh , and made me cry sometimes too,and given me some things to consider, some really good ideas.
just want to add, i,m not much good at posting, and keeping up, but i do read a lot of the posts, and print loads of info out, recipes etc etc as well as book marking , everything in sight lol

It's good because people here don't judge you for who you are or what's wrong with you. they take you as you are and try to help whenever they can. Thanks everybody :D
