I’m newly diagnosed only on the 6th December so I’m trying to get my head round it all. I’m a T2 and had a very high blood sugar count when diagnosed, I’m trying to eat healthy and lose weight but went out today and felt guilty eating ham egg and chips even tho before i would of had burger. Xmas day I have a pub meal booked so I’m having a dessert it’s a chocolate peanut stack which I know is so so wrong but I haven’t a clue what i should be eating at the moment

Try not to worry and take one day at a time. It’s great you’ve joined the forum so early into your diagnosis - I didn’t discover it for 23 years and when I first joined it blew my mind!! Just remember everyone is different so find out what works for you through trial and error and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right first time.

Nothing wrong with ham and eggs, or a burger. Some of us would just skip the chips and bun and ask for some veggies.

As for dessert there is the option of portion control.

I had my xmas already. Over ate. Not carby foods, just way to much and still paying the price. Just a large shrimp Cobb salad with all the fixings. My stomach still hurts and my bs is still running high. Although I did catch a cold but I still have to consider my mantra, one bad meal ( too big or too high in protein) equals three bad days. Not sure why I have to keep reminding myself by testing the waters. It never works. Now the thought of food grosses me out haha.

I like the look of the above recipe but when they refer to measurements in cups I wanna know how big is the cup? What is the actual quantity?
You can buy sets of cup measures very cheaply in places like Wilco. They are useful for American recipes, all of which seem to come in cups rather than oz.

I just examined my set of cups. one quarter cup = 60ml ; one third = 80ml ; one half = 125ml ; one cup = 250ml so I suppose two cups = 1 pint? But who measures in ml? Easier just to go with the flow and buy a set of cups.

Commiserations! Reminds me of an awful Christmas I had two years ago, long before I had ever heard of bg. I live alone and avoid social Christmases, so I rather revel in the freedom to eat whatever I fancy. On Christmas Eve I found that my favourite high class supermarket was selling off its quality veg at knockdown prices. I took advantage and came home with my favourite Jerusulem artichokes (not often available), parsnips, sprouts etc etc. And most of my Christmas Day was ruined, as after my super-healthy vegetarian dinner I suffered from the most extreme and agonising bloat I have ever known, before or since.

Yup. I thought my intestines were going to explode and we were getting on a plane! The cramping and severe bloat are slowing going away since dinner on Friday but I have no interest in food. I was going to enjoy my vacation and I was the chef so making all this food and getting a handfuls worth seemed wrong so I indulged a bit. Those darn veggies, especially lettuce! Cobb salad was romaine ( evil) shrimp, egg, bacon, avocado, pico de Gallo, cilantro and spicy dressing. Brie before. I think too much food and too rich.

The first night was roasted lamb chops, asparagus, salad, avo slices and roasted sweet potatoes ( not for me) and I just had the lamb and asparagus as I didn’t want to ruin the vacation with a horrid gut

Next two nights chicken salad with bacon, eggs and chopped veg. Good again.

What’s with the darn veggies?!

Hope your meal is better this year. It’s just not worth the consequences. And if my stomach isn’t happy, I don’t sleep and bg is high. Arg...

My Christmas treat this year was a small glass of Irish cream (aka Baileys) on 2 days. It got me wondering just how much refined sugar there is in it. I don't really understand how people say it's loaded with refined sugar as the drink is just cream and whisky (and whisky is a distilled spirit). Is it the chocolate they flavour it with? Any advice please?

Thank you
David

Thank you for this Alison. I have just looked on Google for distilled whiskey and apparently sugar is added to the distillation process (unlike other spirits like gin and vodka). I did originally have a feeling that whiskey had added sugar in it. Is this where the drink gets the added sugar from (the whiskey) or is it added at another stage in the process?

I over indulged over Xmas. Usually stick to a low carb diet and lost 2 stone on it and brought my reading down from 13 to 4.8. Well ruined all that and had a reaction to all the lovely meals out sweet food eaten and drinks. Woke up Boxing day with headsche whirling head and nauseous Aand ihadnt drunk night before. So back on LC Diet.

You could try this recipe. It's certainly simple enough: http://simplysohealthy.com/low-carb-irish-cream-liqueur/

For me, it has always been an overly-sweet-gunky drink, but if you're drinking that, there's plenty of other stuff for me. :)
