Worried about my mum

My mum has had sickness and diarrhoea for the last 3 days, she was diagnosed Type 2 10 years ago and her control is quite poor. She started losing her sight straight away and has nerve damage in her feet and fingers. She's been bringing up all her medication and when my brother took her to the walk in centre her BG was 13.0! My brother is her carer (she's a widow) and when I spoke to him yesterday he said she couldn't support her own weight so she stayed in bed yesterday. I'm so worried about her, she's going to be 70 in August and even though she lost a lot of weight when my dad died she's still overweight.
 
Hi. What sort of diet does your Mum have? Is she having alow-carb diet? A reading of 13 is not good but could be worse and wouldn't normally be the cause of sickness. She, does however need to get that weight and blood sugar down. Is she having annual checks including HBa1C etc?
 
Hi , so sorry to read about your Mum , must be an awful worry for you . It sounds like your Mum needs to see a doctor sooner rather than later , could you suggest this to your brother ? The last thing she needs is to become dehydrated as well as her other problems .

Thanks for posting the link to this, it was really useful. My brother told me that their advice was to make sure she was well hydrated and to try and make sure she takes her Gliclazide because that's her most important medication. When I spoke to him earlier he was going to ring 111 to ask their advice - she's been asleep for over 8 hours and he's having difficulty waking her.

Hi, my mum doesn't actively follow a low-carb diet but she's certainly not having as many carbs as she used to. After she lost weight her appetite was much smaller than before, we joke that her stomach has shrunk! My brother (her carer) has a phobia of needles so the only time she has her BG tested is when I visit her every Sunday. Her average is 9-10 so the 13 is a bit of a jump but like you say it's not as bad as it could be. She has annual checks including her HbA1c (I'm not sure what her last result was) and her eyes are regularly checked because she is registered blind. She has an ulcer on her toe so she also visits the foot clinic every couple of weeks

Has your brother managed to wake your Mum? If not, I would seek urgent medical assistance.

Hi Kate, thanks for your reply - it is a worry for us. My brother is a stickler for his health, he will be the one to make sure she sees a doctor ASAP!

I don't know, I tried ringing the house phone and there was no answer and his mobile is switched off. There is a possibility he's rang an ambulance and they've gone to hospital.

Edited to add - my brother just rang me from the hospital. Apparently the ulcer on her toe was infected and the infection has spread into her bloodstream. She's going to be in hospital for a couple of days but at least they know what's wrong and she's being treated for it

I hope this is the case, as by what you've said, it sounded like your Mum needed urgent help.

Pleased to hear they've found out what was wrong.
 
We all visited my mum this afternoon and what a difference! She'll be staying in hospital for a few days but she's feeling much better. She even complained about the hospital food which is a great sign!

Thanks, it was so great to see her back on form. She said that they tested her BG earlier and it was down to 9.6 which she was really pleased about
