Hello, this is my first thread. My husband has been Type 2 for many years now. Has a check every year with our GP practice, last one in June last year when all was OK He's in his mid-70's and takes Metformin 500 mg twice a day plus Simvastatin and BP pills. I'm not with him all the time and I think possibly his diet is non existent with regards to his diet.

My concern is that he's absolutely exhausted all the time and I think it must be because of his diet (or lack of). I know I need to look and absorb the forum so that I can help with recipes etc, what he should and shouldn't eat.

Would it be worth seeing the doctor again and maybe his medication should be upped. Don't really want to do that if diet can help. Thanks for reading.

@Bananarama I am new here but at the same time feel like I have been here forever, so can't give any good advice yet, but know that there are so many helpful folks who will be by to point you and your husband in the right direction:)

Many T2 s do very well on a low carb diet, which can be introduced slowly so his medication can be adjusted - with support from his diabetes team. If he is willing, then get a blood glucose monitor to check his level before and a couple of hours after eating to see how many carbs he can tolerant withing spiking too high.
There are loads of low carbs/keto recipes to suit food preferences.

Welcome to the forums @Bananarama. If his exhaustion is caused by diabetes (high blood sugars) then reducing the carbs in his diet has a good chance of helping.

The problem is that at the moment you have no idea what is causing the exhaustion : a vitamin deficiency, stress, high bgs, sleep apnoea? There are literally hundreds of possibilities and you have no idea which apply.

I'd recommend talking to you GP who can do the diagnostics.

But, in the mean time, as regards the T2, here's a link to my favourite link about T2 and diet

But really, you need to know how his blood sugar levels are faring, either by the hba1c test that the doctor does (gives an average over the last 3 months) or by buying a glucometer and seeing how his body reacts to his meals.

Good luck.

Hi. Having a low-carb diet is the most sensible way forward. Don't keep the fats or proteins down as they help you keeping full. The statins may be the cause of fatigue as they can affect some people that way. Get your husbands lipids ratios checked by a fasting blood test (having stopped the statins for a few days) to help decide whether he needs them. Also discuss with the GP about stopping the statins for a period of time to see if they are the cause of fatigue. GPs treat statins like sweets so be prepared to challenge them.
