Hey everyone.

I dont know how long this area of the forum has been here for. I only noticed it now. I'd just like to say thank you for creating it. I am 3c myself. It's good to know that us 3c's now have an area on the forum. Good job! :)
 
Hi forum has been here since April, it is good to find you own type of diabetes has representation and fellow types can exchange info and support

I am classed as T2 as was originally when diabetes was diagnosed. I have since had a very serious bout of acute pancreatitis which put me in hospital for 6 months, approx. 8 years ago. Since then I have been on insulin as my pancreas was very sick and needed a rest was how the hospital described it. At present I feel that I am over prescribed and have also lost about 14 lbs in weight making me around 9st 8lbs. My BS levels seem not to require nearly as much insulin, I take 20 units of Novomix in the morning and 30 in the evening. Evening used to be my main meal of the day but mostly now this is at lunch time. I was considering asking my GP if it would be possible for me to stop taking insulin and go back to the oral meds, ie Metformin and Glicazide.
What advice could any of the forum members give me prior to visiting my GP in two weeks time and what sort of discussion should I have.

Hi @pollyr What are your blood test results like throughout the day? Can you give us an idea of an aver age day's figures?
 
BS between 7 and 10mml in the morning and between 6 and 11 mml before bed. It's rather hit and miss as am chasing the insulin with food throughout the day to keep my BS over 5 or 6 and have them over 10 before I go to bed. I am eating carbs which I don't really want. I have reduced my insulin from 24 units prior to breakfast to 20 units and from 35 units to 30 before my evening meal. I am due to have my HBa1c checked next week. Last one was 7.3 a few months ago.

Ok : ) Another option you could ask about is a basal/bolus insulin regime instead of your mixed insulin. The advantage of basal/bolus is that you don't have to eat to chase the insulin. It also allows more flexibility with meals.

Basal/bolus is one (or two) injections of long acting insulin and injections of fast-acting insulin before meals. If you eat your main meal at lunch, you can adjust that pre-meal fast-acting insulin accordingly.

If you are Type3c you will have to continue on insulin as your alpha and beta cells have been destroyed, you will need a blood test to confirm. Also agree with @azure changing to a basal/bolus regime will help. You can cut out carbs like bread, rice and potatoes, get carbs from other fruit and vegetables

If I'm not mistaken I think that if you have chronic pancreatitis it is easier on your pancreas taking insulin injections instead of oral medication. Someone with more experience may have more info. As above. :)

so sorry I hijacked your thread ' everway9. ' Was a mistake, am not quite as familiar with the new forum layout. I realised my mistake and was about to move it. Apologies.
I don't think I am T2 as hospital mentioned T3c back when I had acute pancreatitis. The consultant didn't expect me to have further attacks after I had my gall bladder removed but the damage had been done. I would like to know the current state of my pancreas as no tests have been done in 8 years and would a c peptide test tell me if it still produces insulin. I did wonder if the basal/bolus insulin would be better but I wanted to avoid taking more than two injections daily. I hope my GP can help me with a decision as certainly I do want to avoid further damage to my pancreas with oral meds.

No need for the apology pollyr. I was just having a laugh. :)

You sound like you have been through a lot of the same things I have. I know only too well how painful pancreatitis and gallbladder problems are and send you big hugs and best wishes. Or it could have been 95. I cant remember but it was definitely one or the other.

With me not having any experience with oral diabetic medication I cannot comment as much as I would like to about them and how they affect your pancreas.

With my situation as it has been... 13 holidays to hospital and chronic pancreatitis the specialists put me straight on to injections. Lantus Solo (basel) and NovaRapid (bolus) because my pancreas has a hard enough time as it is without throwing oral medication at it. They said that they usually put type 3c's in my position on injections rather than tablets.

I am not implying that you do but I personally do not have a problem with injecting insulin and have taken to it like a duck to water. :)
 
Thanks everways9, could not find link but will recheck. Sounds like we probably had similar problems. I was in hospital for 6 months, especially as I caught sepsis infection which caused major damage. I was put on a sliding scale insulin there and given Humalog mix of 7 units daily when I left hospital. I think it is probable as you say that I may not be able to go back to oral meds but I am unhappy with my situation as it is. I have a new GP who specialises in diabetes so think it could be a good time to explore other treatments and have tests which I have not asked for in the past as the insulin was working fine but wonder if there has been an improvement in my pancreas which may allow some changes to be made. I fortunately do not have the digestive problems which chronic panc. sufferers have but I would not wish to compromise my health. I know little about other insulin or how it works so am on a fact finding mission before I visit my GP. Any help will be much appreciated, and hope you are feeling well.

I will research as am interested in your experience of pancreatic problems. I really am not sure now what type of diabetic I am and it will be helpful if my GP can clarify this for me. Thankyou for your posts which have given me some new ideas to discuss with my GP. I will post any further news if it proves to be interesting to the community.

No problem. I would have thought that if you have had pancreatitis in the past that you might be 3c. Maybe it depends on how bad the pancreatitis was or how often you have had it. There seems to be so many different diabetes types. Before I was diagnosed I only thought there was type 1 and 2... plain and simple. But noooo.... nothing about our bodies and medical problems are ever simple. :) I hope you get some satisfying answers to your questions. Yes please let us know how you get on. Good luck.

Hope all goes well with your doc and the insulin he gives you. Maybe take a friend and / or a notepad is often a good idea. Anyways your doc will have all the results etc. I think this website is great for info. Please post what he prescribes and why if you can?

BTW, I think you need digestive problems (usually prescribed creon) to be 3c. (?). Lol, hangon, do you also need the maldigestion or just the destruction of the alpha cells to be classed type 3c?

Also earlier in the thread you said "not much insulin" then described 50 units novomix / day. Not that it matters much, but that seemed quite a lot.

Both alpha and beta cells are destroyed if you are type3c
 
Sorry for asking this but Type 3 - does this mean you all have Alzheimers, are more likely to get Alzheimers - I'm not too sure I understand what Type 3 is. xx

Type 3 or rather Type 3c is diabetes caused by damage to the pancreas - there is a sub-forum for people with Type 3c: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/type-3c-pancreatic-diabetes.73/

The term Type 3 is being used by some Alzheimer's researchers, but as far as I know, it's not an official diagnostic term.
