I started this thread because im not sure what to make of this
http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/diabetes.html
please have a look and voice your opinions :D

To the mods please move this thread instead of locking it if it counts as a low carb topic :D

Hi Ken - totally agree - he claims to cure everything.

I once wrote to him and asked what his qualifications were - the response was quite astounding - rather nasty man! He is a former pilot I believe !

he advocates a low carb diet for everything!

Hi Ally.

Yep ! The word 'Quack' comes to mind........seem to have heard that somewhere before.....

Cures....I saw on a website the other day some idiot who reckons Cancer can be cured by cutting out the carbs........amazing ! Wish I had known that .

Hope you are well.
Ken xx

Just looked at his website - well that is a change I do not think he said before that he has a distance phd - gosh you can buy anything ! I amy be wrong but i am sure he was calling himself Doctor before!

Some of my dietetic colleagues are doing phds and i cannot imagine that a distance type doctorate is worth the paper it is written on lol! Bit like gillian Mckeith !!

I am fine thanks Ken - supposed to be doing some work!!

He did used to call himself Dr until he was rumbled. In my view anything with 'Cure' in the title has to be suspect. I have seen articles on the net debunking him and his theories. Just another fanatic who thinks he has the 'cure', but is really more interested in making money.

Here is a link to just one site which slates him. Make your own mind up.......mine is !

Work......you will get banned using 4 letter words on here !
Ken.

actually he has revised his bit about his phd
With a doctorate in nutritional science from the American distance learning university, Trinity College & University, (NOT the Spanish diploma mill with a similar name) gained from 20 years' research experience and a 60.000-word dissertation on the Politics of the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies
This is what Wiki says about the institution.

Ally, I have got a distance post grad degree from the OU, hard work and totally legitimate.

he also clams to advice individuals - and he his self taught , that so called dissertation has no basis on practice!

I didnt mean to knock distance learning , the OU runs alot of courses but generally with tutor input etc.

I took a look at his website and my opinion is 'quack' does come to mind..

My impression of his site, a money making scam....

He suggests that he's got a Phd, and know nutrition inside out, then if so why does he suggest that you can cure T1 diabetes with diet a lone??? He believes that T1 is curable, as he says it is very rare that the pancreas doesn't produce any insulin, so all you need to do is reduce your carb intake to a level that matches the insulin the pancreas is able to produce, vola you'll cured!!!!

As to his credentials, well I've got a feeling that he wasn't a poilet in the RAF, he mention that he trained as a electro engineer then went into the RAF, but doesn't say what he did, and in truth only a very small percentage of RAF personal actually fly! (MY husband is also ex-RAF)

And his disclaimer says it all... If you follow his advise and it goes wrong, he's not taking the can!!!

How do you factor in the consumption of protein in this scenario then ? On a low carb diet about 60% of protein turns into glucose as well so therefore your diet would have to be somewhat limited to maintain blood sugar levels.

The Health On The Net Foundation (HONF) who once accredited Barry Groves web site have since revoked his accreditation following complaints, hardly surprising when you learn that as well as promoting a low carb high fat diet he also argues that sunscreen is responsible for skin cancer and not sunlight as believed by the rest of the world.

A bona fide nutter IMHO

Oh dear............................................................!

Don't think I'll be rushing out to buy Mr Groves book then, sounds like a few other cranks who all claim to have the answer to our ill's. Never ceases to amaze me why people believe and follow these morons, who are trying to flog some book or lifestyle dvd.

Seems nowadays that people can't make a informed choice of their own, most of us on this forum don't choose to follow one doctrine with regards to managing our diabetes, but prefer to use the knowledge we have gained with first hand personal experience, that is the best way to control this condition.

'A cure'.................................I don't think so!

Jopar,not a pilot.
His website says he was an electronic engineer commisioned in the RAF.. Coincidentally,OH was an RAF engineering officer, in the third entry to become an engineering officers with a degree. That was in 1973, long after Groves joined .So I wondered whether Groves even had a first degree, did he at least have an academic training or a somewhat different career path?
Searching the London Gazette, the only one that seems to fit was a Chief Tech commisioned as Flying Officer( Secretarial Branch) in 1972, retired as Flt lt (admin) in 1982. There is no degree after his name on the resignation notice, they could have missed it out ( but it is on OH's entries in the Gazette, not that OH would claim any knowledge of nutrition.)

He has the same credibility as any of us here, his opinions are just that.
