Xpert Patient feedback

Our last session at the Xpert Patient course is next week. We have been invited to bring something in, made from one of the recipes in the booklet. Have managed to lose 2 1/2 stone over the last 6 months - and I didn't do it by eating chocolate cake etc!

We will be given feedback forms. The presenter did a very good job, and it was her task to pass on the official NHS/Diabetes UK advice - but it is an opportunity to criticise it.

Do you think there is any point in my saying that I disagree about the T2 not being encouraged to test; and with the make 50% of your meal starchy carbs advice?

I am not a low carber, more a moderately restricted carber with an eye on the glycemic load - which is how I lost the weight, and which seems to be keeping my bg levels OK.

Any advice on how I could word this assertively but tactfully?

Hi Romola.

I am much the same as you, drastically reduced carbs and GL etc.

As for the tact....tell it like it is. Why be tactful. They usually get 'uppity' when we tell them that the NHS/DUK advice is rubbish for an awful lot of Diabetics and patronise us when we say we need to test.

I don't let them get away with it anymore, neither should you. :D

I will certainly write something - but I don't want the diabetes nurse who did the course to feel too bad, as she has to follow official guidelines.

I went along prepared to listen - and I did follow one of her suggestions, which was to not test for several days and then, when convenient, do a day when you follow the whole day through - 7 tests in all. I found this useful, and reassuring. But I wouldn't have the reasonably stable bg levels I have now, if I hadn't learned through testing what and how much I could eat at any one time.
And if I hadn't started to do this straight after diagnosis.

I will certainly express my views - as the NHS hasn't listened to informed reason, perhaps force of numbers will help.

Thanks for your support, cugila.

I did the Xpert course. I found it was full of valuable reminders, and although I haven't kept in touch with other course members, it was nice to meet real people and know I am not alone!
