Hello All

I'm 70 and live in Australia and am a Type 2 diabetic (20+yrs). I use a product called Xylitol as a sugar substitute.
Has anyone used this and has anybody experienced elevated glucose levels as a result?

Thanks in advance.

I've used it in baking and not noticed any spike. I use Splenda (mainly Maltadextrin) in tea and coffee.
Be careful with Xylitol if you have dogs, it's highly poisonous to them.

Ive used xylitol with minimal but noticeable spikes, I prefer using Erythritol nowadays - no spikes

I use an erythritol/stevia blend as it cuts out aftertaste from both. It does not seem to affect my BS at all. I will not bring xylitol in the house as I have a dog.

I bought xylitol but as soon as I realised the dangers to dogs I gave it away to a friend who was pet free. I wouldn't have it in the house now as even when cooked, if a dog eats a cake made of it they could die.

In dogs[edit]
Xylitol is often fatal to dogs. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the number of cases of xylitol toxicosis in dogs has significantly increased since the first reports in 2002.

Dogs that have eaten foods containing xylitol (greater than 100 milligrams of xylitol consumed per kilogram of bodyweight) have presented with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can be life-threatening.[42] Low blood sugar can result in a loss of coordination, depression, collapse and seizures in as little as 30 minutes.[43] Intake of doses of xylitol (greater than 500 – 1000 mg/kg bwt) has been implicated in liver failure in dogs, which can be fatal.[44]

The possible cause of hypoglycemia experienced by dogs is that xylitol in chewing gum is released more slowly and absorbed over longer period than when it is consumed as a pure form.[45][non sequitur]

My family bake with this and it works really well. I had some home made walnut and carrot cake made with Xylitol this evening around 2.5 x 4 inches after my meal, my blood sugars only went to 5.4 on a Libre Freestyle (so really about a 6 mmol). At the weekend I had some sugar based birthday cake (hated it) about 0.5 x 4 inches which left me with a 6.4 (went down to 5.4).
