The first woman with type 1 diabetes to successfully receive a pancreas transplant

Thursday saw a fascinating breakthrough: a British woman with type 1 diabetes underwent a pancreas transplant because of a serious needle phobia. Ms. Sue York describes the feeling as "incredible."

These breakthroughs are especially welcome in light of the news that people with diabetes are still not receiving essential health checks. The National Diabetes Audit found that only 27 per cent of people with type 1 diabetes get the eight recommended checks.

A new study finds that people with diabetes have significantly improved health outcomes when they are given structured treatment for depression. Research suggests that people with diabetes are between two and three times more likely to have depression, and the resources available have traditionally been scarce. This study, however, provides positive news: with the right treatment, people with depression and diabetes can seriously improve their health.

In other positive news, Israeli researchers  have used smartphones and pressure-sensing socks to reduce foot ulcers in people with diabetes. In the long term, this technology could significantly reduce rates of diabetes-related amputation.

Challenging the low-carb guidelines
Dr. Sarah Hallberg, the Medical Director at IU Health Arnett, United States believes ignoring medical guidelines is the best way to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Speaking at a TEDx event in Purdue University earlier this month, Hallberg strongly advocated the low-carb, high-fat diet for patients with type 2 diabetes.

“The general recommendations are to tell patients with type 2 to consume 40-65g of carbohydrate per meal, plus more at snacks. We are essentially recommending that they eat exactly what’s causing their problem,” said Hallberg.

This diet may also have benefits for those with type 1 diabetes. Read more to uncover Hallberg’s findings.
