Blood glucose levels and Public Health Collaboration to combat obesity |

A group of doctors and dietitians have created the Public Health Collaboration (PHC), an initiative designed to combat obesity and type 2 diabetes. The PHC argues that "the current [dietary] advice has got us into our sticky situation. A complete overhaul is needed for our dietary advice based on the scientific evidence in order to improve our nation's health!"
By creating more effective dietary guidelines that improve health outcomes, the commission could save billions for the NHS. Around 80% of NHS diabetes spending goes on complications, but this wouldn't cost so much if people had better blood glucose control in the first place.
The new IMPACT 2 study, a collaboration between JDRF, Sanofi and Diabetes UK, proves it. The researchers found that even moderate improvements in blood glucose levels made a massive difference, potentially saving the NHS more than £5 billion over 25 years - simply by preventing complications in the first place.
In less positive news, pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly has increased its revenue by 15 per cent - but arguably at the expense of people with diabetes. Revenue from Humalog insulin has increased substantially, but that's more to do with a sudden rise in price than higher volume of sales.
