Combat diabetes-related stress + are NHS Health Checks wasting money?

Stress can be problematic for people with diabetes because it can lead to changes in blood glucose levels.

Stress can arise from daily challenges such as traffic jams, work pressure and financial worries, but people with diabetes can also find that their management routines provide their own stresses.

If can be frustrating if you have been struggling to keep your blood glucose levels at a normal level. Unfortunately, people with diabetes who are consistently stressed are also more likely to have poor blood glucose control.

If you have been experiencing stress on a regular basis, it can lead to problems such as interrupted sleep, which is known to increase the body’s sugar cravings. If stress begins to adversely affect your eating habits, it can raise the risk of weight gain and further affect your blood sugar levels.

Feeling stressed can sometimes be unavoidable, but is it important to know how to combat stress. Tackling stress head on will be beneficial in making sure your blood glucose levels aren’t affected too severely.

Physical activity can be extremely beneficial in lowering blood glucose levels as well as improving insulin sensitivity. Listening to music or going for a quick walk can help with mild stress, while mindfulness can be helpful for longer term stress.

If you are really struggling with stress due to your diabetes management or other life problems, you should book an appointment to talk with your GP or a member of your diabetes team as soon as possible.
