Hi all. After being positive I was going to return to my low carb diet - and even posting on a thread here that I was looking forward to it - I've messed up.
Today began with - a slice of chocolate cake and a stollen slice. Dinner was low carb - BUT - was followed by a large slice of iced and marzipanned xmas cake!
BG this eve was 13.5!!!!!
I need a good strong talking to - or I'm going to end up back where I started :(:(:(

it's never too late to start again. Are you feeling rubbish at 13.5? It might help if you did.

Look on it as an experiment that has finished and wave it a fond farewell only to be repeated on your birthday and next Christmas.

Yes - I got complacent. I ate what I wanted over xmas and didn't get any high spikes. But I suppose that's the point of the low carbing - over time it helps you become less insulin resistant. I'm just so annoyed with myself for pushing it.

Oddly enough it made me feel how I have always imagined a hypo would feel - kind of shaky and strange.

That's how I feel with high numbers, too. It does wear off. You could take yourself off for a brisk walk if you want to bring it down a bit quicker - if you live in a safe area or have a big dog. Keep safe.

Lins - you're giving yourself a mighty tough talking to already! :) Especially wanting a virtual slap! ;).

Xmas, easter, birthdays - these are tough times for diabetics using diet as treatment as you are. Don't be so hard on yourself!

What I do, and many others using diet as treatment do, is give yourself treat days to deal with the special occasions. Rather than see it as you messing up - see it as you letting the steam out of the pot a bit, so you can keep that pot boiling over the long haul (which is going to be the rest of your life? Probably?) How much you allow yourself depends on your own health goals. And another thing I do which is huge in my eating way of eating plan (in my signature) - is substitute. I eat low carb baked goods, buy stevia sweetened chocolate and have a bit every so often. Then I don't feel deprived. Make yourself a low-carb cake! Coconut cream icing. Check your blood after. (it's very reassuring!)

So, the marzipan was, and might be again - your Xmas period treat. (But yeah - 13.5 - argh! That's high!) The chocolate cake for breakfast.... old habits die hard? A cliche for a reason perhaps. (I say this as someone who has eaten chocolate cake for breakfast.)

To really get into a new eating regimen - I have done the one month strict adherence thing. Then at the end of the month, think about doing it some more, or adapting it and trying that out. Keep a journal! Or , yeah - write in your thread to keep the momentum going. Think about your next blood lipids test, where you will get a new HBA1c and new numbers - hopefully and more than likely reflecting better health. Then - think about your body and how much you like having it! (and not slapping it lol.)

And then get virtual slaps on the back from us! :).

Did just that - the dog in my avatar pic is mine - Bg down to 7.1 after.

Yeh unfortunately I've always been a fan of sugar at breakfast. Have even been known to eat sherry trifle for breakfast.
Anyway, I've had me panic lol Have made sure to prep myself some low carb food for work tomorrow and try and put today behind me!
Thanks for the responses xxx Its always so helpful to know there are folks out there that know how it feels. Really appreciate it xxxx

I have tried making a low carb cake - was a bit of a disaster and tasted horrible lol. But I should try again. I shouldnt give up just cos I didnt like the first one I tried.

I hear you! I served such a cake on a netflix date with female rellies and my mother (who is actually prediabetic with type 4 - as an elderly onset person) and I heard my mother mutter, "You can tell this cake is a healthy one...". I pretended not to hear! lol. But I get the cocoa, the bits of summer fruit on the top, am getting used to the stevia, and really enjoy the whipped coconut cream icing - it feels like cake at least! although it does not really keep like cake cake.

There are really good low-carb cakes. The nicest one I know of is a paleo lime pound cake, again with coconut cream icing.

But yeah. Not the same. But close!

Re our desire for sweet for breakfast: If you can have half an apple in your low carbing, I have half a baked apple, the apple flesh mixed with a ton of ceylon cinnamon, and baked for 45 mins (I prebake about four, and freeze them and eat them for breakfast over a week). Mixed with a tablespoon of cream and tablespoon of full-fat Greek yoghurt, and with maybe a few fresh blueberries - it's a wonderful sweet (ish) LCHFish treat. And 'only' 10g of carbs. (I need apples to keep my gallstone in check.) Apples is one of the reason I am a 25g-50g of carbs daily person, not on a true ketogenic diet. But my gallbladder likes a half an apple pretty regularly. (It's good to know what we - and our various body parts! - like :).)

Ok ... Slap coming your way .... When I stray off my LCHF way of eating the wife just says ..... 'So, you don't want to see your feet any more, a big slice of high carb is more important !'
By not seeing my feet she is saying they could be removed due to diabetes compilations or I could loose my sight due to the same compilations..either way I won't see my feet.....
I kinda like seeing my feet and then step away from the carbs ....

Yes. That works pretty well for me too. (The feet thing - not the slap! Never been into pain....)

Well-controlled diabetes (ie keeping blood glucose down, mainly by lowering dietary carbs - lest we forget! ;),) can take a couple of days off a year though, is my reckoning. But of course this is a very personal decision to make. Everything to do with food is!

For me, it is fruit mince pies at Xmas. Spaced out over a few days, with lashings of cream. And one of my carefully portioned roast root veges thing. (This year at any rate!). For my birthday it is a (major franchise fast food chain edited out for good taste ;) ) breakfast - riddled with trans fats and sugars - once a year. Well, so far. If the nerve damage in my feet gets worse - well. I'll face that when I come to it. Yes, diabetes is a b**** - for sure. (But still - not deserving of a slap! :).)

Sound thinking there @AloeSvea . I just pushed things too far this year. Buy hey ho - first diabetic christmas. I've been thinking about this a lot over last couple of days, and am trying to congratulate myself on all the things I DID refuse - and there were a LOT! I'm a specialist nurse - working in oncology - and I'm sure you can imagine the mountains of goodies we get presented with at this time of year. And from the whole mountain, I ate 1 chocolate biscuit this year. I took in lots of nice snacks for myself - things like salt and pepper cashews and smoked almonds (most annoyingly a lot of my colleagues came pinchin em lol - one even told me to bring more salt and pepper cashews but forget about the smoked almonds cos she didnt like em!!). Was kind of interesting watching how much people ate.
I also had my weekly weigh in today. And I gained a pound. Normally over the xmas festivities I would gain 4 or 5 pounds. So although gaining isnt something to be proud of - its not drastic and will be gone next week.
Its just been a bit of a disappointment at how quickly I slipped back into some old ways. Four weeks ago I would have hesitated to touch a piece of cake even once a month - never mind 3 helpings in 1 day!
Anyway, like I say I'm going to take into consideration how much LESS I had than normal, get back on the wagon and remind myself why I'm doing this. (gives my toes a jolly wiggle).
As for the slap - it was a 'virtual' one I wanted - a kick up the backside - a prod in the right direction - my masochistic tendencies aren't well enough developed for owt else ;););)

Where are you?

If you're close enough I'm happy to supply a real slap.

You already know what you want/need to do, as do the rest of us

Do you get carb cravings? Not everyone does, but if you do, it makes the wagon rather high to climb back on...

Dishonesty, selfishness and lack of empathy.
Any chance I can join in the queue for a slap? (Or a kick - I'm not fussy..)
Christmas has been a mega disaster. A carby, sugary screwup. I know there are "those" foods sitting in the cupboard, can't get rid of them because of family, and need to dig deep for willpower.
I'm looking at quite a weight gain and I know the temptation is strong to give up and slip into old habits..so slaps gratefully received!
