Type 1 how long does it take for the complications to kick in ??

i got my first "diabetic changes" in my eyes about 5 years ago.........

this was likely down to a sudden change from poor control to good/moderate overnight.....

apart from that I have not has any issues............type one for 16 years....
 
waw that's an encouragement to me . but i seem to have self control issuses when comes to food
 
I've been diabetic for 5 years and haven't got anything wrong with me or so i hope not :p
I am now getting back to good control >.<

Who say's you are going to get complications?
Does this person have a crystal ball?
No one can guarantee you will or wont get complications............. You need to help yourself though by learning all you can and achieving the best control you can. There are members on the forum with 60+ years of type 1 diabetes and no complications.

are you a woman or a man ?... id like to know the effects on child birth and sexual feelings

Have you seen the books think like a pancreas and using insulin? Both can be found on Amazon, many people swear by these books.
Take one day at a time and gradually things will improve for you. Don't set massive goals small ones are easier to achieve. If you take on to much and set your sights very high and things go wrong you then feel deflated and want to give up. So gently gently does it.

In answer to your question @lila isaac . How long is a piece of string..?

I was diagnosed the same age as you a long time ago...
Nearly 40 years later. No problems.

Yep, I've made the odd mistake along the way.
Just be mindful of the diabetes & anything is possible.

Some of my friends haven't been so lucky.

Hi @lila isaac I'm female :)

First of all, remember complications aren't inevitable. Many people with Type 1 live long, healthy lives. As medicine progresses, we'll have more technology at our disposal, and, eventually, a cure :)

To answer your 'female questions' - I have 3 healthy children :) Pregnancy with diabetes is hard work - lots of testing and adjusting of insulin because of the hormones during pregnancy, but you get a great team who look after you and baby, and some extra scans, so it's nothing to be afraid of :)

I also don't think you need to worry about diabetes interfering with 'sexual feeling'. Not quite sure how to answer that, but everything is fine.... :)

It will have been harder for you to keep control while you were growing, but for me the secret of good control is to count carbs and match your insulin dose to your food, and to test your blood sugar lots. I try to keep my blood sugar in the recommended range as much as I can.

I have an insulin pump. I've found this has made control easier for me, but you can still get control on injections :) If you keep some records of what you eat and how much insulin you have and test your blood sugar 2 hours after eating, then that can help with control as you can check the dose you took was the right amount for the foid you ate.

lol, thats the hard part of diabetic, testing anf dosgin is easy............its all about the food.......

I am a man, so no experience with child birth............

no problems with sex either, although my libido does fluctuate from time to time, I can go through spells of having no interest that can last up to 2 weeks...........is this related to diabetes, maybe, could also be the fact I work during the day and the wife is out till 10pm at her work and we have 2 small kids.....lol....
