hi . I am type 1 but at the moment I am only on 2 units of levemir no Humalog with meals . my levels are good but over last few days ive started to get cramp in legs. I tested my keytones today 0.5 . I tested my keytones last Friday 0.2. im not having as many carbs as I was when having Humalog with meals. a bit worried why the ketones would shoot up like that. any advice much appreciated.

Hi and welcome

You need a specific set of circumstances for ketones to be harmful. This link explains the details, but basically it would need high blood glucose and insufficient insulin for ketoacidosis to occur.

Here is a chart of the levels at which ketones are harmless to everyone, beneficial (for low carbers) and dangerous (for insulin dependents).

With levels of 0.5 and 0.2 you are very safe.

Hi Brunneria,

Seeing as we're on the topic of ketones. Say if I was on a low carb diet and had my bloods under control with ketones of 2.0 but then all of a sudden I jump up to high blood glucose range, can you DKA quickly?

Thanks.

That, I am afraid, is not something I can answer, being a T2 with no experience of ketoacidosis (but plenty of experience of nutritional ketosis).

But I do know that DKA can come on quickly, and needs rapid treatment.

Hopefully some experienced T1s will be along and can speak from experience.

If your ketones and blood glucose levels are both high then you can get DKA. It can come on quickly and can be deadly.

Its normal to have small amounts of ketones so i wouldn't worry at all bud.
