Type of diabetes

I was at the dentist and was in the waiting room when a woman in her 50's started talking to me. She went on about a few things eventually telling me that she was diabetic. ..oh said I so am I its not good ..she asks type 1 ?....I said no type 2 ....shes says oh thats not bad its not serious....I was flabbergasted I tried to explain but she said it was my own fault as it was self Inflicted....At that point I decided not to waste my breath as she was obviously ignorant. .why do type 1's always think its a game of top trumps.....ALL DIABETES ALLTYPES ..Are serious and not always self inflicted im not over weight and very active it WAS not my fault....rant over just fed up of being told oh you have the mild one or its your own fault ignorance abounds.....has anybody else came across this?

Do not waste a moment's time on her. You will never get any sense out of stupid ignorant people.

You can't beat stupid. Ignorance drives me mad - I'm not surprised you're upset. Don't let her words hurt you. And I hope your dentist was gentle!

:)

Lol yes dentist was fine....it is unbelievable the amount of misinformation in the press ...then you get the "experts" who read it and then pass judgement or worse tell you what you can and cannot eat...

I went to the gym few weeks ago and was approach by a young personal trainer. At some point we started chatting about vegan diet and I told her that as type1 I don't think it would be the best for me. Then I heard that with good diet you can reverse any illness (even type1 :woot:) and that I brought diabetes on myself by eating badly. The end advise was not to snack a lot, especially on sweets :)
I told her to google what diabetes is, before giving any advice. Some people are stupid and unfortunately we cant do much about this.
As for having better/worse diabetes, believe me its not nice when they tell you yours is the bad one, looking at you as if you were just about to die

You would think that a person giving out nutritional advice should hold some form of qualifications. .lol.....

I have noticed some type 1s try to sort of distance themselves from type 2s and complain about being lumped together with the same name condition. It's a sort of one up man ship for diabetics.

Even though, I have a blood glucose, glucagon, glycogen, insulin imbalance! (RH).
I still get, you are diabetic, every time I try to explain my condition, to most of the ones described above as ignorant.
It even worse when I go on to explain that I can only eat meat and salad, as a quick answer, they tell me that I should always eat carbs especially complex carbs!
Oh yeah these ignoramuses are usually GPs, dsns, nurses, receptionists and one or endocrinologist that I have come across!:rolleyes:

I'm a type 1 and someone said to me "at least it's not type 2, that's the serious one you can lose a limb with type 2." Lol!! I also get comments made about how I shouldn't be eating this and shouldn't be eating that, what diet am I following etc. It makes me laugh how people have no idea on what all types of diabetes involve as they only chose to listen to what the feel like when it comes to the condition. They are all serious and treated in different ways I don't get why it's always such a competition about which one is the worse one!! I just laugh and shrug it off most days!!!

Not really. I was given diet advice by someone from mytimeactive who hadn't the first clue about diabetes.

Yes, I even found a stupid video on yt(translation from polish): he is so sweety that I can get diabetes. Its unbelievable how people are still so stupid and not aware

Yes, complex carbs are the way forward cos they spike an hour later than the simple carbs. Brilliant

You often find that the less people know about a subject, the more they are convinced they are right.

why do type 1's always think its a game of top trumps

They don't.

You were unfortunate to stumble across one person within a small minority of type 1's who may think this way, it would be wrong to assume every type 1 thinks or acts in this manner @Jim 007*

Noblehead I do not assume that at all but I have come across a fair number...as I have a majority who know all about it ..it is a horrible disease that requires proper management ....in all cases ....

Both types in fact ALL types are terrible..... I am sure I feel for the chicldren who have to live with this in their young lives, I forgot how care free I was when eating and non diabetic

Hi. Don't forget that as a slim T2 you might actually be a Late onset T1 hence a T1 anyway! Keep an eye on your HBa1C. I'm lucky and have never had any ignorant comments made by anyone about my or anyone's diabetes except my GP and a friend's GP (a 'nice family GP' who told him to have plenty of starchy carbs with every meal and he believed it as he was such a nice GP).
